Hi All,
We just moved to Riyadh from the San Francisco Bay Area. My husband started working at the Ministry of Commerce a few months ago. We have 2 children - my son is 9, and daughter is almost 5. They will start going to DPS (Delhi Public School) in October 2009.
Would love to tap into the collective wisdom of this group for suggestions, and recommendations on where to shop for Indian groceries, small kitchen appliances (blender, food processor, etc.), rent Indian DVDs (Hindi movies), and subscribe to Indian TV channels (Hindi).
Also, if there are any folks interested in having play dates with kids, please respond.
Look forward to hearing from y'all.
Take care,
Sonia

Hi Sonya,
to start with, welcome to Riyadh. Answers to your questions depend on your area of residence. In any case for electronic appliance you should try Extra (Old Airport road) or Electro. As far as renting movies is concerned there are a few outlets in Haara where you might get some movies but I am not sure if they rent or sell. VCDs are sold for around 10SAR and DVDs could be 15 or 20 SAR.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Hi Shiraz,
Thank you so much for the tips. We live near Faisalia Tower in downtown Riyadh. We have visited Hara and Batha a few times. Will look for DVDs the next time we go there. Will also try Extra and Electro for appliances.
Any thoughts on where to find the less-commonly used spices - like amchur (dried mango powder), jaiphal (nutmeg), etc. ?
Thanks again!
Sonia

Hi Geeta and to all forum ladies, I am a new entrant in this forum and my name is Indira Chatterjee, married, has two kids (twin kids) and living in Kuwait for the past 10 years. Actually, just last night while surfing the net to acquire knowledge about Saudi, Riyadh in specific, came to know about this site and happened to read all forum messages about Riyadh. Well Geeta, thanks very much for all the details you gave away in the forum and in my perspective you are well acquaint with Saudi environment. Please help me in providing the information on following queries: 1. Can I carry God idols through air? 2. Also please feel free to give me the details on the prohibited items to carry such as I read in one site that binoculars are prohibited. Thanks in advance. Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Indira |

Have you considered giving candle making lessons to ladies on the compounds in Riyadh? I know that the ladies on Arabian Homes would be very interested. I'm the Recreation Manager on Arabian Homes. If you're interested in giving lessons, please contact me by telephoning the Arabian Homes compound and ask for the recreation e-mail address. I can't give you my address on here as it is not allowed.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards.
