onions: red? white? purple?

hi everybody

in england there are many variety of onions: red, purple and white.

white one makes my curry sweeter so i am using the purple.

i wonder what r u using and what is best for indian cooking?

Hi, as u said, white onions gives sweet taste so I am using red onions for my cooking. I feel it suits for my south indian cooking.

i think the light pink ones and the red ones are the best one for indian cookin and also these give a gud taste to traditional sambar n all.i think they are called shallots here.rite?

u were right pavithra the shallot are good in sambar but the red one give all the dishes a red colour.... i dont like it very much.

the pink one is similar to the indian onions. in fact they called it like this or bombay onions.

I use small red onions (shallots) for making sambar and kozhambu varieties, they r more commonly called as "Sambar vengayams".

I make use of large pink ones for chutneys and other gravies..

But i am yet to give it a try on white, yellow onions..

Might be ladies who have tried on other colors could share their opions also..

as red onions are costly,i have got both (red and white),and use them alternatively,but red one's are sweet to eat raw (as we indians like them to be eaten with some special dishes).

White onions available here are sweet compared to the onions available in India. I dont think white onions are suited for indian cooking. Also red onions are too dark. They taste good in salads. I personally think purple onions are good for Indian cooking. They are not too strong or sweet. But purple onions are not readily available in all shops here. Anyways, i like to use purple onions for our curries.

in my place purple onions can be easily brought..... a lot of indian shops sell it under the name indian onion or bombay onion .ur right about white onions giving sweet taste.......yyyuuuck i made chicken curry with lot of white onions once.

I like to use purple onions for curries. I don't like the white onions that much.
The curries taste better with purple onions for some reason.
