Default Rice & Wheat flour in Patel

hi,

last weekend, i went to bhavani cash & carry (Exit 5). There's a huge demand for rice and wheat flour. No oprions were available in wheat flour, "bhavani" brand alone was stocked. is it gud enough or shud i wait some time for new stock? likewise neither priya brand sonamasoori rice nor ponni raw rice was there? which is the next option? the prices are also too high. as of now any 20lbs pack is $20 and any 10lbs is $10

hi cindhuja,

there is a worldwide shortage for rice and other grains like wheat, corn etc....so india has stopped exporting most of the rice varieties and atta...so it is better to buy whatever is available and not wait for any varieties....at the same time, no need to over stock also....things are expected to come under control soon...though the prices might not come down due the general food price inflation..

hi,

the lakshmi brand is very nice, as that is 18.99 i tried udupi sona masoori 15.99 it is very nice. where as it is better to stock which ever u get. also the idli rice. don't just try in the indian shops. if u have any mexican veg shop u might get them, even the costco and sams have limited the number of bags per person to just one. as the restaurant people and some indian stores too have started getting from them and selling at the new price. so create some space in your house for storing rice bags.......

As u all already know that rice prices are going up and up..........

I tried Mexican rice (10$ for 20 lbs and in super market 7.99$ if we buy other items for 50$). we can surely use that for making adai batter, appam batter even for dosa (pacharisi dosai).......try it if u wish........

Recipe for Idli/Dosa with the American long grain rice

Chocolate/Kutty -

I was so shocked with the rice and wheat price when I visited the Indian grocery in Oak Tree Road last weekend, after nearly a month. Somehow, I didn't pay attention to the rising rice price earlier. Even Aashirwad atta has gone up a lot! Since I didn't know about this and was really shocked, I left the store without buying any rice or wheat. Now I regret it, as the price must have gone up some more.

Anyway, y'day I went to shoprite and got a couple of the store brand 10 lb long grain rice bag. Now, it's on sale too - it's $4.49 per 10 lb bag. I usually buy the lakshmi brand Idli rice and I could not find that brand anywhere. And I'm running out of Idli rice as well. Have to make idlis at least once a week.

So can you guys or anyone give me the proportions of rice to urad dal (ulutham paruppu) for making idli/dosa batter with the long grain rice that we find in american grocery.
I'm really upset now, that I didn't know about this before and didn't stock up on indian rice.
