Hi,
I've worked in Japan for close to a year on deputation from my company. If you are going on deputation from an IT firm here in India to Japan, I guess you could get anywhere around 4-7 lakh Yen per month depending on your IT concern.
Cost of living in Japan:- Cost of living is high if you try converting to INR. But for the salary you get in Japan, living there should be really comfortable. For housing, try taking an apartment offered by the government instead of private housing. In Japan, there is this concept of key money and advance. Currently the key money is 2 month's rent and advance is also 2 month's rent. Key money is NON-REFUNDABLE while the deposit amount is REFUNDABLE. Govt housing do not charge key money. They take only the deposit amount. After the final inspection of the house when you are vacating, your deposit would be refunded after deducting any expenses for cleaning, repairs etc. So go for such housing. You can get housing info through agents. Your company should be able to help you with that. For household items you can go in for recycled items which are in real good condition but you can get them at lower costs from the recycle shops. Then there is this 100 Yen shops like Daiso in almost all places for your needs like buckets, mugs, containers etc.
Savings:- You can save around 1 lakh INR. :) Even families with kids have managed to save lots. I've heard from many of my friends who've also been in other places around the world that in Japan you can make the maximum savings. :)
Knowing Japanese:- It is necessary to learn atleast the basic words in Japanese. If you are gonna stay in Tokyo, Kawasaki or such areas, you can manage with english [Try only using the key words. Dont mind the grammar. Speak slowly and they would understand]. But try learning Japanese atleast for survival. It can help you a lot.
And dont worry. There are lot of indians around in Tokyo prefecture. And if you manage to take a house with public housing you can find atleast 20 indian families in a building with say 70-100 houses. :)
I wish you a great stay in Japan. You would just fall in love with the place, the people and the administration. I bet you would find it really hard when you are to leave the place. I still miss Japan a lot....
