Default need info about japan, indians and gujjus!

hi all
i am new to this forum. greetings!
i am about 39. educated in india and england. still single.
am a journalist. an editor with a newspaper called The Asian Age. also director and group editor with a gujarat based publication.
now: i am planning to visit japan. it is a personal visit. my cute 8 year old niece has just got a first prize in an essay competition. she lives in new york. she has to come to tokyo to collect her "first" prize and she is excited about it.
during my trip, i wish to spend about five six days, any swirling suggestions for a great sojourn? where all can i travel? what is there to see?
i cant spare more than a week.
i would love to do some nice easy reading stories too on the indian diaspora. i am interested in getting in touch with some gujaratis also.
i am a vegetarian and any particular guidance on being a vegetarian in japan?
i plan to vist japan in the second week of november.
pls send in your ideas, suggestions, comments etc
ciao
dee

hi dee dee

Sorry for replying late in this thread. The most important places to cover in Japan are Tokyo tower, Rainbow bridge, and as you are accompanying ur neice visiting Disney land would be a wonderfull experience. U can visit Enoshima islands and Kamakura where there are lots of Buddha temples -real feast to the eyes. U can go to Ueno zoo where there are lots of animals including Panda bears and Ueno zoo is supposed to be the oldest zoo in Japan. There are two museums also near the zoo. If u want to shop for electronic goods u can go to Akihabara and Shinjuku.

I am a vegetarian but I dint find it difficult here coz there are lots of Indian Restaurants in Tokyo and ofcourse Mac.Donalds. If u go to Mac.D u can ask for a vegeterain cheese burger and finger chips. Say Nikku dhame(no meat), Sakana dhame(no fish), cheese dhake(only cheese), Asai burger(vegetarian burger). Asai means vegetarian in Japanese. And if u are eating in any Japanese restaurant u can ask for Asai items but also stress Niku dhame, Sakana Dhame.

Hope U enjoy ur stay in Japan.

Regards
Rakshantha

I dont know whether there are pure vegetarian restaurants in Tokyo. The restaurants that I have visited serve both veg and non veg.

I think the following sites will be useful for u to find Indian restaurants in Tokyo.

Hello

I have just come across this website whilst looking for information about Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis who have settled in Tokyo. I am a female artist who is visiting Tokyo for the first time this year, on two different trips. As someone who has been documenting 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th (!) generations in the diaspora for 20 years now, I wanted to meet South Asians in Tokyo who have made it their home and who would be happy for me to photograph them with a view to creating something more longer term later. I am also specifically interested in how women have made it their home. I have had many exhibitions and books published on my work, and I am easily found on google as an artist. But as this is my first time on this website, I am being a bit cautious to give out my details and to avoid spam!

If anyone can give me some leads on organisations to contact, I would appreciate it.

With regards

Poulomi
