One question I keep coming across in our thread is "
What do I do in Houston on weekends ?".
Here are some pointers you might want to check. I have collected it from various sources and discussion forums in houston and am sharing it with you all. I have also considered the cost factor
Feel free to add your items on list. Also write about your experiences on visiting these places.
1) Most of the museums are pretty good. (prices vary)
2) Check out the downtown tunnels at least once. (free)
3) The JPMorgan Chase building has a great view of the city. (free)
4) The International Festival is cool. They do it every year for 10 days or so, I think in April. (I think $8 if you purchase tickets ahead. Of course, there's lot of stuff for sale once you get in, but there's a lot to see & do w/o buying anything.)
5) Gem show at Reliant park stadium. Check reliantpark.com for schedules.
6) There's a cool waterfall on the south side of the Galleria. I can't remember the name of it. It's a tourist thing where people like to get their picture taken. (free)
7) Definitely go see the USS Texas before they close it down. (I think $10)
8) The tango community is fun. Classes cost but manageable and cheap. The evening camaraderie is great. Good people and a great atmosphere.
9) Another suggestion is to check out the local alternative news media.
The most widely known is The Houston Press, a weekly alternative paper
(kinda like The LA Weekly or the Lo
s Angeles Free Press) available free
at several "cool" food or drink places. Of course they have a web site.
10) The Houston Chronicle, usually Friday's paper (correct me if I am wrong) has a section of what is going on in the city. They sometimes have a free listing.
11) If you have kids, Herman park is cool.
12) Some of the parks have a small "water parks". They have the tubes that water sprinkles from. We have one off of Barker Cypress in far west houston.
13) The Arboritum has some wonderful trails.
14) In the Katy area, and Peckham Park has free putt putt golf. You can
also fish in the pond/lake.
15) The
Houston and Harris County Libraries are great. Most of them have free classes of some sort. They also have tons of info what is going on in the area. I personally vouch for this one.
16) There's also
the Skateboard Park and the Downtown Aquarium. There's also the Arboretum in or near Memorial Park, Bayou Bend, the Beer can house in the West End, the Orange Show and so on.
17) You should ABSOLUTELY visit the Forbidden Gardens - it's like a trip to
China, but without the airfare.
