Default Anyone living in Montreal / Quebec ?

Hi friends,
My sister's friend is expecting a job offer in Quebec ; so wants to know if it is suitable for Indians to stay there. Toronto has a high Indian / Asian populn., but what about Montreal ? Is knowledge of French a must ? What about schooling for kids --- he has 2 children, both studied only in English medium till now ; they are 9 + and 7 yrs. old. Before moving he wants to know if suitable for family also ?

Kindly respond ,
Thanks in advance,
Pushpa.

Hi
My cousin lived in montreal area for 2 years and he did have a hard time
you do need to know french and the children are also taught in french in the schools
so maybe they might have a hard time
but they will get used to it and they will learn a new language

I know learning a new language is hard but you have to do what you have to do
and if they do not like it there it is not so hard to move to another english speaking city if they have their immigration status

I hope that helps
we live in the toronto area
but I have been to montreal many times

all the best

Gurmeet

Hi Gurmeet,

Appreciate your posting here since there was no other activity in this thread.Yes, here kids are taught only in French in public schools -- and pvt. schools teach in English but rather expensive. We're moving next week to Jean Talon area where I was told more Indian communities are there -- so happy to be seeing 'apna log' again.

Hope more ladies living here contribute & make discussions lively.

Cheers !

Hello all,

I know this is an older post, but I just signed up on these forums. I moved to Montreal a few months ago, and am trying to connect with other Indians here but am finding it hard! I work in the Plateau. Does anyone have ideas on how to get in touch with others? Oh, I'm 32, married, no children.

Hope this way works well... :)

Hi Kurunji- We moved to Montreal 6 months back. Yes mostly its french dominated but you do have lots of English speaking.... in areas like West Island where I stay. Yeah there is a rule out there if both parents are from english medium their children will get into French medium only. Also there are Private school who charge a lot if you want to put them in English medium and i guess you need to get some kinda permission from govt. I will try to get some information more on this during the week.

Even we are in look out for Indians...specially who can speak tamil/telugu/hindi.

Best of luck and hope I was able to give some info out here.

Warm Regards,
Myura

Hi,
I came to Montreal 6 months ago,and for sure there is French everywhere!... But English gets us around too.
I have also heard what Myura said regarding that govt rule that allows kids to go to Eng schools. One of our friends who stays in the West Island has her kids going to an Eng public school.

I visited there recently. Have you folks seen all those little stores dotting St. Denis? They are fabulous.
