| Thank you Ria for starting this thread. I used to cringe on seeing such posts. Coming from a place like Mumbai, I find it really difficult to digest these things. It's nice to know that there are many like me who don't approve of this. Rgds Hema |

| I personally think that with such diverse cultures in our country this gives us a chance to learn about other cultures also rather than restricting to one particular culture only. I also think that we should think globally and not restrain ourselves to just one thing. Seema |

| I am Malaysia's 3 rd generation , which means my greatgrandparents migrated to Malaysia from India in the early 1900. For such a long time we are kinda out of language and a little tradition on dress code ( we cant wear saree everyday there... ! ) .... but we still speak our language at home & follow vegetarianism... however we are so open in mixing with everyone in our country. Malaysia is a multiracial country and we celebrated lotsa festivals ! Diwali , Navarathri , Janmashtami , Ganesha chaturthi , and me being from a very traditional family... we observed all hindu rituals and festivals. We also enjoy Chinese new year , Islamic festivals and Xmas ! I studied in England and got married to an Indian who is settled in US. Haaaaa......... how many links are there...I have been global trotting since... but Im glad that I am in touch with my roots... thats India and being Indian. My parents have also taught us devotional singing , I play veena and have done my bharathanatyam and Odissi. No one cld tell that I am not an Indian ! Many think I am from India...... some asks am I from Bangalore , Delhi , Mumbai , Hyderabad... its that they keep guessing... ( and I enjoy that fun ! )Sadly , sadly ........... the people that I knew from India... once they know im not from India... treated me differently... I too dont know why... its like I neither belong here or there ! I cant understand ! Initially friendship seem to be okay.. but then once its known im not from India... then i get cold shoulders... I'm happy to see a thread which I hope can open up many people's heart and mind. We can learn so many things knowing each other from different corner of the world ! A country doesnt determine a person's character or nature , its the person itself. It depends on the PERSON , background and how they are raised... one should not look bad or down upon foreign born girls ! We cannot change people , we can always change ourselves towards betterment ! Peace !

| Another thing is that , when we fill up forms for identification or when asked by someone , we often say "I'm from India" or "Asian" , "East Asian".... never in columns its stated as "Rajashtan" , "Haryana" , "Tamil Nadu", "Andhra Pradesh" etc.... :)

| Hi Vimalasri, Nice post though i did find it strange that once people find out that you are not from India, they kind of shy away from you. How does it make a difference anyways, whether you are from India or not. Very strange attitude, i must say .There are many indians who have migrated and settled in different countries but are still in touch with their roots and culture. Its actually a very nice thing, to be in touch with your culture/roots inspite of being away. Especially, today, when the younger generation in India itself is not bothering to learn about their culture. I like it when people imbibe the good of other cultures into their own. Well, hats off to you i say. Cheers! Sanchita.

| Hi , Totally agreed to all of you.Even I saw SouthIndian don't want to make relations with North Indians. They always try to seek friends based on religion. When I was in San diego I have seen people who talks with me in telgu even if theyknow hindi and english. And commented me like this why don't you learn telgu.I said I am very much keen to learn new languages but you guys don't even know your own national language.

| Hi, I think that is a very harsh generalization. Many north indians start talking in Hindi without even finding out if the other person knows Hindi or not. I have had this experience many times. I don't consider it offensive but rather odd. Even if I converse back in English the other party would answer back in Hindi. BTW I don't think it is mandatory to know Hindi. I think it was imposed as our national language. Though I am open to making friendships with people from any part of the world due to language barriers some people prefer to speak in their mother tongue. Hence they may prefer friendships from their regional area. Thanks, Kavya. Quote:
