Hi All, My name is Ramya I will be shifting to Melbourne from Singapore with my husband and two kids by 10th May, have many queries in mind. My kids are 7 (Girl) and 4 (Boy) years which are the schools I can look forward to admitting them in? Indian surrounding to stay or look out for a house, what about the groceries (is India stuff easily available). Looking forward to hear from you all shortly.
Hi Ramya, Welcome to Australia, Which suburb are you planning to go to? Do you have any family out here? Dont worry most of the suburbs are good though there are some shady ones which you should be weary off. Glen waverly and wantirna are quite decent eastern suburbs, and also have a good mix of multi nationalities indians included. And some of the best schools are in glen waverly. Groceries and restaurants are in abudance you wont have a ny shortages. All the best Roops:hiya
Hello Friends I have moved to melbourne about a month ago. Before moving to melbourne I also had many queston in my mind and had posted some queries into this forum too. But, didnt get so very good response. Anyways Still I do want to give the new comers some intro and wherabouts of the City Melbourne Ok first What you should not Do: --City is Ok .But frankly I didnt find people as friendly as it was in US(So ladies who are Coming from US might feel little but dont worry Email Me IF I know the answer I might help ) --It is not recomended to stay out of the house too late in the night. BUT STILL A "SMILE " Goes a long Way Which Suburbs are good: ----------------------------------- -I feel almost all are good but there are few suburbs which you can avoid : Footscray, Altona, Deer Park,Werribee (these are few suburbs My husband's Office Friends told us to avoid) Where to find indian Stores Well you can search it easily with Google. For Eg: I stay in South Yarra ,the nearest store to me is the one which is on Victoria st and Chuch St intersection City is Filled with Indians . Travel -------- If you have car then all you need is a GPS. Otherwise,if you are working in downtown/City (People say its difficult to get a parking in the city.) Best way is to travel by Tram or Train . To Find the info about the train. You can visit : Home - Metlink - Your guide to public transport in Melbourne and Victoria ( Official Website) IMP: If you dont have car I recomend to take apartment which is walkable distance from train and tram stops You can get the train map from : Metropolitan train network map - Metlink - Your guide to public transport in Melbourne and Victoria there are 2 type of train lines 1.Yellow Line 2.Blue Line If you travel from blue line to yellow line the fares will differ. There are 2 types of tickets for train /Tram travel 1.MetCard - Per week ticket Price: $ 30 1 Month ticket Price : $115 With these tickets u can travel on any zone and on any tram or train I am still looking out some cheaper ways for travel 2.Myki- I am yet to expore about myki card ..I think it migh be chaper .But if you are a daily traveler the Metcard is a better option I think.. (Ladies please correct me if I m wrong) Renting a House/ apartment -------------------------------------- There are 2 website which most people use -- http://www.domain.com.au/?mode=rent -- Rental Properties, Homes for Rent and Apartments to Lease - realestate.com.au Well the nearer to City you are the higher the rent will be . but the farther you go you might get to rent a nice house/ unit for a $300 to $350 (per week) Here the rents are calculated as per the week. I m staying in an apartment in South Yarra ( It is $ 400 per week) Here the lease is for 12 months mostly You need to Hunt for the house/apartment really hard if you want the house within 2 weeks( I know I did) --NOTE: Mostly the People are open for Inspections Of house /apartment On Saturdays Only. Yeah but if you go to some rental offices .. Like William Batters , Jellis Craig ,. you might get apartment keys to look on the same day Phone (We had 2 phones with Us) ---------------------------------------- We Bought one Sim card on the day we landed at the airport It was for $30 which gave us a talktime for $300 .. It was a decent Card( It was yes Optus) Another Sim We bought for $ 10 Its LYCA- YOu can call for cheap to India (about 19cent for 1 hr call I think) We just wanted one phone where atleast MY husband should be able to reach me . the Lyca sim card we bought after few days after going though several plans .You can get the card from any 7 eleven / Indian stores You might use that from the begining itself Furniture ---------------------------- Here In australia we dont get Refrigrators , washing Mashines and dryers in the Apartment itself (As in US) But again very few aparments do have the fecility of Washing Machine ( U might want to look into it when u search for apartment) So It is an added expence. Initial Furniture u might get From IKEA -If u want very basic Its a good option We Got our appliances from a Shop Called GoodGuys ( It was in Whitehorse Rd,Blackburn ) they gave us a good deal . You can ask them for discount .. . Good Guys were really good to us =================================================== Other Stuff is to get from KMART - Household cheap Stuff Coles - Daily Vegetables OK I old you few things which I thought might be helpful for Newbies For Any other clarifications please EmaiComputer Typingl me also Correct me If I am wrong . :welcome Regards Sundeep Kaur

Hi Corallux, Was going thru this site. I found you guiding lot of people who are trying to come into Melbourne. I stay in UAE. My husband is from Kurla, Mumbai and I am from Bangalore. We also plan to come into Melbourne next April. Wanted to know if Camberwel is within the city or in the suburb? Travel time to universities from this point? Have thought of this place as we got to see Shirdi Saibaba temple there. Will be grateful if you can help us. Have a great weekend. :cheers GN:
