Wondering if any of you ladies have done a free assessment of your houses (its a govt initiative) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions...
If you haven't you should give it a go...the add is usually in your local newspapers. Give em a call and fix a date, the company ( there are a couple) will send their staff to your place to do a free assessment of your home incl checking for roof insulation, changing all light bulbs, checking the heating system and will also install free shower heads etc and they will give you advice on what can be done to lessen your carbon foot print.
We got one done recently..it is informative and in the long run saves on energy bills...I think its a brilliant idea to help conserve resources and keep the planet as green as possible.

Hey Neev

Have not seen that or maybe I just did not scan the papers that well. We did have some people come to exchange light bulbs with energy savers. That was quite handy and the entire house is now using energy savers. We also changed our shower heads when the council was running a swappng of shower head scheme (possibly it is still ON). Then we got water saver attachments or a flow restrictor I think it is called, for the rest of the pipes in the house (laundry, kitchen, ensuite, bathroom).

Roof insulation, wall insulation, heating system etc is something we have not looked into really. Although I remember we had made sure that the Energy ratings were good for those, like you said, might be worthwhile checking them again.........mmmmmm... good point.

Rain water tanks is one thing we were looking at, Solar panels on the roof was another big budget idea.... Need to tint all the glass windows, revamp the front and back yard....... and many more..........it is never ending really.

Tell me about it K2S...
I was excited to buy this house...it is all perfect except to have to deal with this constant repairing/improvement thingy...on an ongoing basis.
My budget doesn't allow me to do it all at one go and finish it off for a few years...so we have to constantly plan n replan...
yeah! we did the health check through envirosaver...
although ours is an older house, it has roof insulation, so we decided that the solar panels will get done instead..the govt is offering a 1600 dollar rebate currently for the scheme....
Water tanks, we thought of kingston tanks...they apparently supply to a lot of plumbers too...my problem is that the garage area does not get covered by the one tank, so we will have to install a smaller tank for that area...and we are debating about a 10k ltr tank for the backyard and toilets.

My front and backyard was like the outback when we got here, we had to shovel off about 6inches of dried leaves and grass over growth. We have managed to salvage some plants, having pruned them severely. We have put in gypsum to break down the soil and planted (so far successfully) an orange, a dwarf lime and some cammelias and they are flowering.

My backyard fence just got redone, so now we will work on the raised flower beds all around the yard.
Loved your idea about the Geraniums, will def plant some..planning to put in some native hibiscus and some climbing roses too (we have a trellis on one side).

The exterior painting and the lawn should hopefully be done this summer, if we can manage the budget and the effort.
Aaah!! tiring...but will be pleased as punch once that is done...for a lil bit I guess...

I agree..its never ending...but I am determined to change the house to suit my needs...
