Default School Admission Age

Hi!
I am an Indian and planning to move Melbourne.

Regarding admission, I found that required age for admission to grade one should be six by 30th April but my son's birthday is 24th May , I want to know whether he can get admission for grade one while completing his six otherwise his one year will be waste.

I also found the different admission eligibility dates for kids admission across the states. How this issue is handled when the family moved to another state and it affects the admission age criteria for child ie as per one state rule kid is studying in 5th grade and in other state eligible for 4th grade?

Pl suggest me.

Thanks in advance -
Princee

Hi,

Please visit the department of Education wesite and find the school close toy you and call them up. in most cases if the scholl that you are approching does not have a capacity full over 70%, they usually would take him orther wise he would be at kindergarden for ayear, also depending on wether he passes the basic numeric and aplhabetic assesment at the time of admission, please refer to Department of Education Website.

Sorry! not aware what they do in India these days in school in terms of curriculum...I was in school many moons ago...here in melb its a more hands on approach in primary (dont know much about secondary school...than say..rote like in India...they do literacy (reading, writing), numeracy (maths), ICT ( computers), arts (music, art, craft), lote (language other than english)... could be mandarin since that is popular, sport and Intergrated unit of study...where they combine (history, geography) but its not at all what we did back in our time...

It takes a different and more wholesome approach and there is lots of student involvement even in year 1, which help them think and come up with answers on their own.

It might take a little getting used to coming from India..where portions have to be completed by each term, there is lots of theory, the teacher explains and students are supposed to memorise everything and are then tested...(if its still the same from what I remember).

You can also check with different schools whether they will accept your son, since he is only one month away from turning six. As far as I am aware they are pretty strict about the starting age in school, but try your luck. All the best.

Hi

I may not have personal experience with this, but from the experiences of my friends and relatives, I totally agree with Neev. Coming from India, you will surely feel that the kids are not learning anything at all in their Primary Education years. But the approach they have here is completely different. I have seen my cousin's kids growing up here. They are in higher classes now and some of the things that they are asked to do is fantastic and very different to that back home. Memorising and answering is not the style here. No standard answers, but the teacher wants to know what that individual student's interpretation of the subject is.

We may feel that the child will struggle when he/she gets to higher classes as they do not learn that much. But as they go up, the work/assignments and amount to study etc goes up. Many parents send the kids to private tuitions for Math and English and some of them bring some books from India to teach the kids at home ( if they feel the primary education is not upto their mark ). But really, the children are exposed to more hands-on approach here which I feel is good. They appreciate and learn the subjects better.

My Daughter'sD.O.B is 2nd June. She started her Prep when she was 5 1/2 yrs. Here they feel the child must have completed 5 yrs at the time of Prep, so that they already know the basics of social, physical(motor) skills. They expect the child to be independent to do their things like packing/unpacking their bags, tying their shoe laces, stacking the chairs etc all by themselves. I think it is fair enough.
Many of our Indians do not like the Primary education here. I have seen and hear about kids crying when they have to go to school in India. Here it is very rare. I would say teaching is more challenging than learning in Aus.
