Angry What's wrong with Aussies?

I just don't understand the behavior of Australians towards Indians. And I am not only talking about the recent terrorist attacks. There have been many incidents when australians have targeted Indian needlessly.

First in the case is Mr. Greg Chappel. That man came, saw and destroyed Indian Cricket team single-handedly. He not only removed a perfectly fine captain from its post, but also created a sense of tension and fear in the team. He misbehaved with Indian media and even showed his finger to people.

Now tell me? What should we in India call this type of behavior? Racism, rude behavior, or just plain, lack of basic manners?

I wonder is it due to the insecurity that is coming out during these recession and bad market times????

I had this opinion that Indians in NZ & Aus are getting much better treatment than in other countries...

seems like its not just one country... is it a coincidence ??? or fate or an pointed out act???that these attacks on Indian students / workers arehappening serially andevery where

For how long have there been indian students in Australia, i think its just a one off thing thats being blown up and up. Racism is bound to happen in any multicultural country, its just a fact of life, soem people are so dumb they like to make racist remarks...not only that in sydney an indian group had a fight with a lebense group...it was on tv...but australia as a whole got accused of being racist, i dont think that is right...yes the lebense group were racist towards the indians but the indians were also racist towards the lebense. And with the police attack, if there was a that much people without permission in one place protesting, it is the polices duty to clear the crowd, they would use violence after a certain stage, regradless of who it was...so i think its just being blown out of proportion here. This is just my opinon..

shahana u cant just base one mans action and claim the whole country to be racist,

Ruby:

1. No country is perfect.
2. No one should blame or name whole country as rasict, based on few mens coward act.

Above statements are good to pacify self or for motivation. But the bottomline questions:

1. Does every indian living in Australia, feel safe..?
2. Can Indians go out without any fear inculcated in mind..?

I am sure, above statements would not answer these questions, but do you have any answer ..??

Few things based on media report:

Australia is a great country with great work & life style and offcourse good weather - no doubt. But these attacks have diminished these fact.

I understand in a multicultural country this kind of things are bound to trigger, but Australians should take the inflow of Indians as a positive to country economic standing. Off-cource this will increase competion in segment of life - which is good.

Australia has a big issue of Law and Order, they don't have enough police force to manage the law and order. I don't believe these kind of attacks happen repeatedly if Police force has been beefed up in the city atleast in attack prone areas..?

Australia has a fundamental issue of drugs and drunks, which police force need to handle in first, I guess there is not enough law and order in place to tackle these.

Again I am looking for healthy discussion...do you have any comments, opinions or concerns..???

Thanks

Hi shahina...

Im also in for a helathy discussion :)

I was born and brought up here, so in my view indians are as safe as they are any where else...and like getting mugged is a chance for anyone...peopel just dont target "indians" they target the wealthy...i know many non-indians that have got mugged.

In my opinon, indians can live very safely like the rest of the Australian population, they just have to travel wisely like evryone else...see the attacks are normally done on people who coem alone at night (way after peak hour) after work, in these case yes they should have fear iand take more caution, not because they ar indian but because they are travelling at an awkward time, it happens anywhere isnt that true?

Once again there are so many Australians who do take the indians inflow as a positive thing, but only a few who seem to stand out now think that it is a problem...but the fact is that any race is facing the same problem whether it be asian, middle eastern, and even many europeans.

I dont think that the police is the case...because the attacks are not in the same areas all the time, i ahve travelled in alot of areas where indians are prone to be in and i have seen 2-3 police cares roaming around at times...and do u think an attaker is going to come where police are roaming around? So it is our duty to travel safley.

Snd i strongly disagree about ur statement:

1. its not Australia's biggest issue, its the around the same or even less than USA and UK
2. And there is enough law and order to tackel all these problems , australia has a population of 22milion and only 120 000 are from indian backgrounds, and in that only like a few have experienced racial attacks...i think it is not fair how u can blame the australian law and order on just this. it is way out of scale.
3. Evrything thats happeing happens in all other countries, but the students here decide to protest against it without permission, causing a massive media blow up, if they had taken permissin to protest maybe thing wouldve turned out diffeently, first they have to do the right thing , they had broken windows in one of melbournes pretiges railway station...is that fair? Doesnt police have to take action then, they cant just let peopel smash public property...everything had just been blown way out of proprtion...indians were happy before and the majority still is.

I have lived in Melbourne and I never experienced racism there. I agree with Ruby totally, all this has been blown out of proportion and the students there seem to be trying to make protests like they would do in India, ignoring the laws of the country - destroying public property and blocking the streets.

Anything can happen anywhere. Does every Indian in India feel safe? Or does every Indian in USA feel safe? I did not feel safe in India most of the time. I can't say much for USA either with all the shootings happening everywhere.

I have a question too - Why are all the attacks in Australia happening on male students and single men?

i have been satying here for the past 2 years and i hav nvr come across a racial discrimination... in fact i lov being hereI m truly dissapointd to see Aus being regarded as a racist country.
I should say that its 100 times better than India where no one cares about anyone.
Indian students here are "ATTENTION SEEKERS". Thy jus want to show off their style.
Sometimes when u get in the bus/tram u can see that all the othr passengrs are quite ;except for 2-3 indians jus shouting and making a huge fuss ..
majority of the students in Aus are from china..but i hav never heared a chinese being discriminated....
as some of my IL friends said v cant blame whole Aussies to b racial ..
its a wonderful place to live and work

Shahina10,

Nice article in TOI. I read it this morning. This is what media frenzy is all about... creating panic amongst Indians in India and creating hostility towards Indians in Australia.

You might also have read this article in the same paper:

Did Indian students falter in etiquette in Australia? - India - The Times of India

Please read the comments to this article from Indians in Australia.

My question is still unanswered - Why are all these attacks happening on male students? There are a number of Indian girl students and Indian men working in Australia. Why have we not heard of even one attack on girls, or on the working Indian men?
