Cool Handy Info

Hi guys,

I was going thro some website which had the following details, it might come handy !!

1. extension cords, you have to change plugs once you are in AU but changing plugs of 10 things is better thn changing the same fro just one.also, make sure its a heavy duty one and carry extra fuse

2. sunscreens are very expensive there to start with, and you need a good protection from sun, buy some from India and go, Shahnaz is good, Lotus is good too and garnier is awesome, incase u plan to pick indian brands

3. pressure coker with lots of fittings like the whistles, rubber etc, the ones available there are not like the ones we use in India.

4. a couple of glasses, plates, spoon, fork, knife, frying pan, rolling pin

5. hat (the sun is a killer when it shines, not good for the skin. if u wana buy there, its alright but will b expensive once u convert

6. hand tools like screw driver etc

7. no masalas

8. wrap all perfume bottles in bubble wrap before packing

9. get clothes, lots of formal (if plan to work), ties and suits and shorts for informal is good enuff

10. copy all ur data on a hard drive, including CDs, there are pirated issues at times

Aussies, can someone explain the first point, coz i'm not sure how it works , and also point 7 as well. Any other details to be corrected and added would be much apprciated.

Cheers !!
Surekha

P.S: I got my ielts score today, i got 7.5 , am very glad. Hope my ACS clears soon !! Pray for me !!

Hi
The positioning of the pins on a plug is different compared to India.Found this on google.Hope this helps
Australian Electrical System
The standard voltage for electrical appliances in Australia is 240 volts and 50Hz,The electric plugs are different in that they have 3 flat, but angled, pins – so you may initially need adaptor's, or arrange to "very quickly" change the plugs when you arrive.

It is very common for new migrants to bring a few extensions, and change the single plugs on those, to an Australian one, to start of with.

Australian Plugs do NOT have fuses, but are limited to a 10 Amp supply.

<< A standard 10Amp Electric Household Socket.

Cheers

Hey Sruthu,

Thanks for the immediate reply. Specially the picture was handy. I hope the screw drivers, spanners and other basic electric stuff doesn't get confiscated at the airport ??

Regards,
Surekha

Question Re: Handy Info

Aussies,

I heard that there a lot of wild spiders, snakes and kangaroos on the roads at times, is that true ? I freaked out when i heard this. I wanted to run away from the mosquitoes, looks like they'll give me company in Aus as well

Cheers !!
Surekha

as long as the screwdrivers and other hardware is put into chk in bags there should not be a problem...
basically food stuff should not be brought in...especially meat, veggies, fruit, seeds, milk products in any form (freeze dried or otherwise), Indian sweets etc. No form of wood (like trays or salad bowls etc). You can bring in small quantity of candy or a couple of packets of biscuits as long as they are sealed (again make sure it does not contain any nuts), personal medication is allowed like vitamins, eye drops, panadol, cough syrup and cold medicine...whatever you bring in to the country must be declared on your form...its a good idea to put all medicines n candy/choc into a clear plastic zip lock bag, so you can show it to them when you walk through customs.

Regarding the spiders, snakes and kangaroos on the roads...it all depends on the place you settle in...I have yet to see a snake or a kangaroo...but as long as you have a yard you will find small insects that manage to crawl in to the house at times...snakes may be found in large park areas, esp after dark...there are warning signs placed close to thick undergrowth. There are other marsupials like possum that one randomly finds on trees but they are nocturnal and again depends on areas.
It is very unlike our cities, so do expect that...but there is no need to be frazzled by it..

Sun screens are very common here and you can buy big tubs of it off the local super market and there is a wide range to fit most budgets. Pressure cookers are a good idea..as are chapatti rolling boards and pins...but no worries again...there are Indian Grocery stores that sell it here...
All hardware can be found in a warehouse called Bunnings...they are cheap and often a treasure trove for new comers who need stuff from buckets n mugs to mops n brooms and tools.
