| | Is Australia Safe for Indians
Hello Friends:
There has been rise in attacks on Indian (students), and robberies in different parts of Australia. So I was wondering if you could shed some light from your perspective..."Is Australia safe for Indians".
I am thinking to settle down permanently, and if attacks/racism is going to increase, then the future of our kids would not what every parent plans and/or hopes for....!!!.
Please share your thought...
Regards,
Shahina

Dear Shahina,
As a mum, I share your concern. Not all Aussies are racists. They come across as friendly people.
Yes, there have been increased attacks on us desis. But please do not generalise.
No place is safe. That does not mean that you put your plans on hold. Be smart. Travel in the first compartment is you must travel. Avoid late travels.
The govt has woken up & has introduced helplines. Did you hear the latest?
Big B has turned down a honrary doctrate offered by uni of Qld. Thar shows how serious matters are.
As the popular saying goes,"This will also pass," this bad phase will also pass.
Brgds,
Corallux

Corallux :
Thanks for your comments, I guess like anyother person I also have my own apprehensions...I did not mean to generalize it.
However what I am curious is ...do we live everyday in Australia always with some sort of fear , or some sort of phobia inculcated in our mind.
I know the latest news, about dedicated phone line or turning down hon. degree from Brisbane Univ. by Big B....I guess these good gestures, these will attract media as well...but the bottom line question remains same.
I beleive people like you who are living there and are veterans in Australia may can give right and better picture of situation.
Thanks
S

hi i was born in sydney and brought up there now im in a differnt state for uni and living alone, i dont think racism is such an issue here...everyone is treated pretty much equally and i havnt been a victim of anything due to rasicm and its very unlikely.

| | Re: Is Australia Safe for Indians Hi, I'm in the process of processing my papers to Aus & now i hear this bad news of attacking indians. I'm a little apprehensive about this but then I agree with corallux, i guess no place is safe . Every city, every country would have certain places that needs to be avoided, and also late night travels. I'm sure in the US as well there would have been many such incidents, but how many of them are returning to their home countries or is it stopping people from going abroad. I appreciate corallux and pink.rubies for the info, however, people in Aus should help us with more inputs about this rather than just reading the post. Let's hope for the best !! Regards, Surekha |

Sureka:
No offence to your post, but just for information...
I have been living in US from past 10 years, and I have never ever seen this kind (physical attack) of racism. Well to the point, yes rasicm do exit every where, but the bigger question is what form..? In work place whether it is Europe, US and Australia..I beleive diplomatic racism do exist to certain extent which is noticiable when it comes to promotion, recognizition..etc.
Based on my personal experience I can say...atleast in US ..Indians are accepted in the US cultural society...but do this same exist in Australia too...may our friends who live there can answer this..???
My question, is purely from rasing a family...who would in the work want to send their kids to school knowingly that there are attacks..???
Just my 2 cents...
Thanks

| | Re: Is Australia Safe for Indians Hi Ruby I'm planning to move to brisbane or maybe adelaide, but not to sydney or melbourne, coz the cost of living is high there. for immigrants like me i feel these places would be better to start off a living, maybe in the future we might move to other places. What do you think about brisbane or adelaide?

Dear Ladies,
No, life in Oz is good. You need not live with phobias etc. Yes, as a prominant polotician said, there will be pests in every society.
The only phobia now on is recession. The Ozzie govt has decided to come down with a heavy hand on the racists.
Things will improve. Till then, all the very best for your move to the "Land down under."
Brgds,
Corallux
