Default Essentials to get to Australia / New Zealand

Hi Ladies & Gents,

I thought I would compile a list of essentials to get to Australia / New Zealand. I felt this will help you settle down better.

For Men & Women:
Office wear & casual wear enough for a year. Please remember; we are in the Southern Hemisphere. Please pack for all seasons.
Under garments
Socks
Shoes (Formal & Casual)
Shaving set
Be prepared mentally to do any (legal) job as soon as you land in OZ.
Enough money to survive for atleast 2-3 months( till you get your first pay)
Medicines for common aliments
Utensils for that comfort food.
Various spices powder (please pack it according to quarantine standards)
Addresses of friends who can help you.
Good resumes for Job-Hunting
Copies of your important documents (keep one with your family & one with each member of your family)
Religious items
For kids:
Shoes
Clothes
Medicines (with a letter from the doctor)
For Accomodation:
Please visit whereis.com. It will give Accomodations suited to your specifications.
In a separate thread, I will tell you what to do once you land in Australia.

Dear friends, I have compiled this list with the help of DH. Please feel free to add your suggestions.

Cheers,

Corallux

Thank you for taking effort putting this information.
This will be useful for anyone who is moving to Aussi.
I and my husband would be moving in end of September to Melbourne
Can you help me with the Indian groceries (dals, pulses, species like jeera, etc) and utensils (cooker, idli stands) available in melbourne or do I need to carry it with me.

Welcome to the forum!

Glad you found the info useful Chandni.

We get groceries here. Please do not carry any item of food prohibited in the quarantine list. The people here are very strict. Pls refer to the quarantine website for more details.

As a new migrant, I would suggest you get all the utensils you require. Utensils are costly here.

As a new migrant, some airlines give you concession in luggage allowance..

Regards,

Corallux

Hi Coral:

I'd like to add more specifics to the baggage limitation.

If you are flying on a one-way ticket, please ask the agent/ ariline for 40 Kgs. You can plan if you get this approved soon after you book your tickets.

Regards,
Prb.

Dear Coral,

Thank you so much.
Good I do not need to bring pulses, flours etc, feels so relieved.

Also, can you tell me if I need to bring the spice powders like red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander- cumin seeds powder and whole spices like cumin, mustard, coriander, cloves, cinnamom, fenugreek.

I will sure pack my utensils as I do not wish to incurr a lot of money on initial set up there.

How is Melbourne as a city to live in. How can I get in touch with Indian people?

I am eagerly awaiting to get to Melbourne!

Dear Chandni,

Please do not get any spices...It will be confiscated.

Get your utensils & appliances. They are expensive.

As for getting in touch with Indians, we have various assoc. Just google & join them.

Melb is a beautiful city. You will love it.

Hope to see you soon in Melb.

Take care.

Exclamation Re: Essentials to get to Australia / New Zealand

Hi,

I have recently landed in Melbourne. I booked a one-way ticket and my baggage allowance was 40kgs. But I was not allowed to carry more than 28kgs in a single piece due to labour laws. That means, those carrying 40kgs will necessarily have to take 2 pieces of check-in baggage.
Also, I bought Ganji powder (Baby food), pickle, baby medicine and shoes(new ones). I knew that what I was carrying was on the prohibited list. So I clearly mentioned all of these in the immigration form.
At the port of entry, i told the immigration officer very clearly where all these items were stored in the baggage. he opened and checked accordingly and allowed all of it.
He also remarked that if the food had industrial packing with the ingredients mentioned clearly on the packaging then there would be no issues.
I think as long as you don't hide anything from them, they are OK. If you are unsure about some stuff that you are carrying then please ask them, they will guide you.Because if you do not declare something on the ground that you are not sure, then too it is akin to not declaring and they do not accept that explanation.

hope this helps!

Hi Shree,

Perth is a lovely city. Capital of Western Australia, it has many famous beaches.

www.domain.com.au will give her a list of apts/houses/units available. They will have the contact details for the respective Real Estate agent she needs to contact.

Regards,

Corallux
