Dear Chandni,

Oz believes in Multiculturism.

Yes, we get into our Salwars & sarees for festivals & social visits. Blazers, skirts , casuals are all fine.

As for office attire, it depends on your HR. I wear Salwars these days to work. My HR dept had no probs at all. People generally respect your cultural beliefs.

Get a few dresses that you can mix & match. Again it depends on how hectic yuor social life will be....

Regards,

Corallux

This forum has been really really helpful!

Also, do people here wear Indian clothes during festivals and ocassions. This is so that I can know how many Indian clothes will I need.

Also, what is Australia's formal dress code. Do people wear blazers all the time, or a formal pant/skirt with a formal shirt is considered enough!

Dear Chandni,

I landed in Melb 3 weeks ago. I carried about a dozen salwar-suits with me. Although i don't wear them outside so much, i use them all the time at home.

I have seen a lot of indians wearing salwar-suits and sarees in and around. I cant tell you much about the office environs since I am at home here. But, my husband was saying that it is more or less non-indian attires and that too not very colorful! he was sayin that you can see many people in black, grey, various shades of each of these! :)

But like Corallux has said, it could vary from office to office!

Dear Corallux and pnm,

Thank you so much for the information.
Moving to another country is such a big decision and there are 1000s of questions that keep haunting me all the time.
I am so tensed and worried, because I have never been to Australia in my life and I do not know anyone here as well.
This forum is really great!

Soon i'll be getting a car too!! So am really looking forward to getting busy..for myself and my son!

All will work out well for you too!

Hi corallux and all others,

we arrived in Melbourne last month and we got a rent house after a long............. search and we settled .we are near watergarden town centre.my kids are admitted to a nearby catholic school which was my main concern .the school is a very good one .we can walk to the railway station and shopping centres so it is easy for me to go alone for shopping .it is a very new thing for me as i am coming back from Saudi arabia. there we cant go out alone to anywhere without husband.

my husband started his job search .he attended three interviews .he had 18 years experience but here they are asking oz experience. He is an Electrical Engineer and last 8 years he was Chief Engineer for a large complex with lots of offices, mall, hotels, apartments, etc.Hope he will find a good one very soon.pray for us.

rest everything ok .and me and my kids all liked the place.waiting to see the places and explore AUSTRALIA.

Regards
nj

Welcome to Melb Nirjohn,

It is good you got a place to stay. Rented properties are hard to come by,

What your hubby is undergoing is normal. Ask him to start in a small company then after some time, he can go into a bigger one.

Be positive, everything will be fine.

Regards,

Corallux
