Sowmya,
Congratualtions on your decison to start a botique. Before you go ahead and start, have a few questions answered. - What are you going to sell?- Sarees( outsourced), salwars( designed and stitched by you), kurtis( same as salwars) - what else?
- How are you going to source? - you will require a clean and a quick materials transction process, anda purchase idea in place
- Where is the shop going to be? Interior, on the main road, etc
- Resources - extra know-how, possible partnerships, tailors, keepers, cleaners - where are you going to source them from?
- How much can you invest?- Money, Time etc
- Money Investment - on what? The people, themachines, the decorations etc.
My post may look confusing, but take it one at a time. Form a clean business plan and then start your venture. Approach your academy, and ask them for almuni members who have set their own units. Talk to them!
Good Luck

Hi Sowmya,
Good to hear from you! Now that you have given some info, I just have a few questions and suggestions for you!
Visit the other boutiques around the area. Get an idea of what they sell, and see where you can differentiate. Also, with your market knowledge, see how much their mark up is. Stock well. You would not want people to walk away seeing limited varieties. At the same time, don’t over stock – as your investments will stay locked up. Most important for all home businesses, Give a name. If possible, advertise in all local newspapers Since you have a diploma in fashion designing, use that too the fullest. Tell people you can design their clothes well. Buy two mannequins and dress it classy. Hire the right kind of tailors. If you know the cutting, please do it manually and then outsource only the stitching. On another thought, you don’t have to get tailors in the first go itself. You can also get it done from a local tailor, if you have the knack. Else, stitch yourself! Lemme see what more I can garner for you! Now, you cannot contact shiviraj through the forum as giving contact details here is not allowed. Also, try not to use SMS style words. Browse through other threads in IL, for a better idea!! BTW, which area are you from in chennai? Cheers Arch | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | |
