Please give Your Suggestions

Dear all

My native place is a small village south of tamil nadu. People there earn their living by making beedies. They dont get a good profit out of it and it is not sufficient to run their homes. Am planning to find some alternate work for them by doing some hard art or craft work. People please give me suggestion how to start and proceed with.

Hi Hema,

Nice to know that you want to work towards the upliftment of your village.

Why don't you tap the resources available in your area and then think of turning these resources into finished products.

You may also have to train these people to hone their skills.

first of all,i will apreciate your hard work towards village people
i have some ideas which i want to share with you..
you can start food products such as pickles,sambhar masala powders,appalams,pappadams,finger chips,fruit jams,pure ghee,semolinas,home made powders such as curry(curry leaf) powders,paruppu podi,chilli powders,etc...because i have seen and also bought food products to help people in village..which have good quality..u can also try for that..and also instant bajji bonda powders,rava idli powder etc,..
u can also go for agarbathis,phenoils etc..

regarding crafts u can try for basket making(wire koodai) using plastic wires..

Thanks for ur valuable suggestions. I'll discuss with people there and try doing which is best possible. Regarding basket making i already tried to make one lady do that, but they feel in one week they'll be able to make only 2 or three and the profit for each basket is Rs30-40, which is very less.

You need to find something different and special about the village. I would not suggest making baskets, etc b'cos the market is full of them.
You need to do some research abt what is special, what would sell the best and where are you going to sell it. Depending on all that you can come up with something.

Also, depending on where you are planning to sell is important too. The product to make will highly depend on this factor. I guess, you need to give more info to us all :) and we can discuss this in detail.

BTW, you have taken up a good project here. Good job!!

As i mentioned the people there know to do only beedies. But they have the capability to work hard. Am discussing with one of our IL'ites Archana regarding Jeweel making. Hope that idea will work out nicely.
