Good explanation varloo and preethi.

Yeah, there is a belief that you should not go to temple or do puja when you have your monthly cycle. I think that was just to give woman some rest since pujas meant getting up early, lot of preparation and hence lot of work. Also temples in those days were at higher altitudes like top of a hill etc and it would be hard for some woman those days to go uphill so they said that woman cannot go to temple on those days. As you see everything had a reason which may no be relevant these days when you go to a temple by car and temples are also not on hill top. Puja days these days we hire caterers and maids so not a big deal. But eventually, it has got so deep rooted in people's minds that as though God will be angry if you do pujas or go to temple on those days. Now, c'mon He is the one who made us woman...right? And God means only love and there is no chance of anger being anywhere there. God is not a man who makes rules. It is eternal love.

People fail to understand the simplest of things and no amount of logic works for some.

Adara, Very well said. I second with you on your thoughts, Preethi. Varloo, nice reply.

They had reasons but it might not be applicable now and following blindly without knowing the reason behind it is foolishness.

Hey Pretinna,
I want to say a small story.

Once there was a Gurukul(ashram), where students learn from saints(Teachers). One fine morning there was a cat which was wandering here and there. It was causing a nuisance to all. So the Guruji asked to tie it in a corner. What happened from then on ,whenever the classes started, the cat was tied in the corner. This became a practice and people started believing whenever classes were taken a cat needs to be tied .

Very funny right? This story is to illustrate whatever the things we do/follow, We must know the reason behind it.

Prettina,
I agree with Preethis logic.

It is true that the eldests do have to shoulder more than a normal quota

of responsibilities so when both are first borns-the couple are more strained....

But ,nowadays ...it makes no sense as families have shrunk and joint families are a rarity.

BTW-I have not heard of such a superstition at all.

Well, I ve heard this too. But it is not followed in my or my parents' generation, as far as I know. I **think** it has got something to do with the responsibilites the eldest child in the family has towards his/her parents and siblings. So, if the fathers of both the husband and the wife pass away, then, the couple will end up having to take care of (to some extent) of 2 more families. Not only financially, but also getting involved in decision-making and all, which was usually done by the father and the eldest son or son-in-law in those days.

But no one gives importance to these beliefs nowadays. People are only happy if we do not interfere in their (parents/inlaws/siblings) matters! And there are many more things to consider when marrying someone than these points.

Yes I heard it to,

But in reality I have seen so many of my friends who are elder sibbling and getting a spouse who is also the eldest of sibblings and they are happily married with kids, so I conclude it is only a superstition.
