hey manu,

not all take dowry as other guys in whole India. I am from perfect orthodox family in andhra ... :) and my in laws did not ask for any dowry during marriage :) . yeah some people do take. But again its girl's parents choice. Frankly speaking i don't encourage giving and taking dowry :). even my parents did not take dowry for my brother. :). In fact i do not like guys who demand dowry and people who encourage the system by participating in it :) . it can definitely be eradicated

hi ,
ya its true in nagerkoil ,its in tamil nadu .Girls parents would

give dowry equal as Grooms's education.

However they don't bother about Boy's salary..one of my friend

she hails from that side....Her parents gaved 2 lakhs cash in hand and

100 pounds of Gold to that boy. That Boy just earns 15000 p.m alone...

And parents wedding expenses also it depends upon the caste...

In some castes Grooms side only bearing wedding expenses and Girls

side they would not bring anything it seems like naykar and scheduled caste....
Anyhow we could not vanish this tradition..If this should be

destroyed means it should come by birth.Somehow 30% of them are

aware about these and sharing both sides...

If every man vows not to put burden on the brides parents then this practice of brides people spending more than bridegroom can be eliminted from the society. India is the only country where they take dowry from brides, this is not practiced anywhere else.

This is a good thread..here is my take on it.In order to change anything in society everybody has to take a stand.Boy,Girl,Parents...

Now if you want a grand wedding share the expenses or go for a temple wedding and don't care of what people say...

The actual practice was in the past that the marriage happened at Girl's place and so all the expenses were over there..The baraat comprises of only a select few. When the Baraat is back then the Boy's family have a feast and they spend according to their status..Also jewels are given by both sides to the girl...

People have changed traditions according to their wish and also call them "tradition"...Streedhan was required because women did not have any claim on father's property...
I would say that women should say that if you want all that money then sign on stamped paper that you get no part of my dad's property because nowadays by law women are entitled to parent's property...

MORE POWER TO THE ONES WHO CAN STAND UP TO THIS AND CHANGE IT...IT TAKES TIME BUT WE CAN DO IT.
