My dear Devikutty,

Stolen the thunder again !!!!
This is a topic all Mothers and Fathers dread....more dreaded by the mothers I guess....
the empty nest syndrome is very difficult to come to terms with.
We were first hit in 1991 and the final flight was when our younger daughter left home in 1993.Now we are rewarded with yearly visits and ofcourse the phone and the net are the only compensations till then ....Que sera ....Que sera......( sigh...sigh....and longer and deeper sighs !!!)

Your poem is a beautiful picturisation of this harsh reality in life that all parents face.......lovely imagery and full of intense feeling ....brings a lump to one's throat.
Encore !! Encore !!
Reading thru' brought to mind the famous poet Khalil Gibran's quote on this
topic of the empty nest;
"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of
Lifes longing for itself.
They came through you but not from you
And though they were with you
Yet they belong not to you."

warm regards
PAULINA

Dear Daffodil,

Thanks for the appreciation ,Daffodil.
Yes its true that we cannot always be with their parents ,but the problem is that many forget to give them a place even in their heart and that is very painful.

Love,
Devika

One really has to prepare for these harsh realities of lives.. when kids leave home for further studies or daughters get married.

Thanks for sharing

Dear Swati,

Thanks for writing in. Glad you liked it.Yes as daughters we need to leave them ,well customs ,but then there are many ways in which we can make them feel wanted. Its fine when the kids are far away but at least when you are near the parents house you can pay them a visit rather than just meeting them over the phone. Its scary to see an empty nest in the dusk of life.

Love,
Devika

Thumbs down Re: When Kids Fly Away

Dear Devika,

Once again you have come with a wonderful creation, in the form of a poem that touches our heart and soul !

Parents..especially moms..don't want to think about this ...infact I dread experiencing this empty nest syndrome !

I do understand that this is part of life, but can't help being in denial...atleast for now..since I have about 6 more years to prepare myself before my first son leaves for college.

Sure, God will give me the strength and courage at the point when my sons leave home to build a life of their own.

You have potrayed the facts so aesthatically in your poem, tears are still rolling down my cheeks..Devika..trying to control them.

You have tapped the right string in all moms..that makes us all too sentimental and have butterflies in our tummy !!

Keep churning out more awesome threads...!!

Cheers
Krithika (Jithiks)

Dear Roopa,

Good to see you here. Thanks for writing in . Yes Roopa sometimes parents do make a choice as to stay alone , but we really dont know whether they do it with their head or heart , but as children its imperative we keep in touch as often as possible.

Love,
Devika

We tell them so much to come and stay with us...but they are more comfortable in their routine.

These are the realities and now even parents of sons say that we don't want to live with our children...they prefer to live on their own or join some good old age homes.

Roopa.

What a lovely poem! How do you manage to take up the facts of life and potray them so well! Even if you had written it as a story, I doubt if it would have had this good an impact as ur poem did.

I am stumped by your poetic skills. Looking forward to more such poems!

Warm Regards,
Purnima

Dear Devika

Your poem was very nice and touching especially the final four lines.
I just imagined myself in my home with my parents around me and how they hug and take me inside when I am there on a vacation.

True we left them (my brother is also here) but defenitely visit them every year.

Bye
kapuchu

Dear Aruna,

Thankyou so much for appreciating this poem. Yes Aruna, Parting is inevitable but parting doesnt have to be permanent .The sparrow waited for the little ones to come back but they never came, same way we must part from our parents but yet we need to keep in touch with our parents. Let them know we are always there for them. The solitude of old age can be very killing and we can try to ease them of that fear.

Love,
Devika

Sooooooooooo sweet and touchy poem dear.........
It is so true like these sweet little birds even our kids will leave us and go one day to find they identity of they own. Tears started rolling down my cheeks when I read the line This happens with all of us...........I know I am a bit senti person we too left our parent, now it is our turn to face the situation. You have compared so beautifully the kids and the baby sparrows.
last 4 lines super but I think all have to go to their own destination, that has been written by the Lord.[/quote]

Dear Jaishree,
Thankyou so much for writing in . I am glad you liked the poem . Well I am sure you understand how difficult it is to live without the children especially when we design our whole life based on their presence.

Love,
Devika
