Lightbulb Muruku Recipes

Hi Tina, How are you? I would like to share 2 muruku recipes with you. These are ideal savories for Diwali. I will try to share more recipes later. Enjoy and give me your feedback. Also, I would love to know your Diwali special recipes.

Regards

Lakshmi Vinoth

I am not sure if you know what is muruku. Muruku is a typical South Indian Savory and you need to have a Muruku Achu (Muruku machine, you get 2 parts) in order to prepare murukus in different shapes.

Ribbon Murukus

Ingredients:
Gram Flour - about 1 & 1/2 glass
Rice Flour - About 3/4 glass
Ghee – 3-5 tablespoon
Chilli powder - 1 teaspoon each per glass
Hing – ¼ teaspoon
Cooking soda - 1-2 pinch (Optional)
Salt for taste (1/4 - 1/2 tsp per glass would be ideal )

Method:
Mix all the above ingredients very well. Add water to make a smooth dough.

Take a pan and add enough cooking oil to deep fry. Place a large ball of this dough inside a "murukku achu" ( use the design with 2 lines on it) and squeeze the achu so that the murukku drops into boiling oil. Turn over until fully cooked.

Cooking time - 10-15 minutes

Murukus with Roasted Gram

Ingredients:
Roasted Gram (Pottukadle – The one which we use for coconut chutney) - about 1 glass (Powder it)
Rice Flour - About 3 glasses
Ghee – 5-6 teaspoon
Till – 1-2 teaspoons
Hing – ¼ teaspoon
Cooking soda - 1-2 pinch (Optional)
Salt for taste (1/4 - 1/2 tsp per glass would be ideal )

Method:

Mix all the above ingredients very well. Add water to make smooth dough.

Take a pan and add enough cooking oil to deep fry. Place a large ball of this dough inside a "murukku achu" ( use the design with 3 star on it) and squeeze the achu so that the murukku drops into boiling oil.Turn over until fully cooked.

Cooking time - 10-15 minutes

ENJOY COOKING

Hi Tina

I have taken few recipes from one of my family friend who is in Dubai as well. Infact she is the one who gave me the recipe for the potukadle muruku. I have not tried her other recipes yet. I will post them to you.

I myself need few easy to make sweet savory recipes. I have posted my request to Chithra Vishwanathan on this site. She will definetly get back to me.

Regards

Lakshmi

Default Traditional menu..

Since my in-laws/GM are from T'veli, they all use to make this standard one in the sweet list-ukkarai, maa laadu, vellayappam etc..

And, Tina, have tried pottukadalai ribbon pakoda many times and the taste will be so good. Should try it.

Abt maida thenkuzhal, tie maida in a cloth or tissue paper, put it in a vessel and close it. Switch on the pressure cooker with water. Steam them(without weight) for 10 mts. Now, take it out, crumble and sieve. Add sufficient amt of hot oil, chilli powder, salt and add water to knead dough. Crispy maida thenkuzhal is ready.

Similarly, tried wheat flour thenkuzhal with butter from arusuvai.com and it was superb.

Rgds.

Hi Ami,

I have made a note of Maida Tenkuzhal. It seems to be interesting. Kindly tell me which design plate should I use in Muruku Achu in order to prepare maida/wheat tenkuzhal? (Round ones or the star ones?)

Also pls give me the link to the Wheat Tenkuzhal from Arusuvai.com.

Regards

Hi Lakshmi,

Here is the URL for wheat thenkuzhal. By mistake, added excess of butter and it tasted like Krishna sweets's savories!! I used mullu thenkuzhal achu for wheat thenkuzhal and for maida, used the plain achu(circular ones).

Have you tried making managombu(another thenkuzhal)? I tried it in normal circular achu using moong flour, besan etc. If you want, will post you the same.
