Default Is there any difference between brown sugar(vellam in tamil) in India and US

    Hi friends..

I have heard that brown sugar(vellam in tamil) has lot of benefits compared to white sugar. But when i checked the brown sugar packet(Clover Valley light brown sugar) here in US, i dont see any difference between white sugar and brown sugar in the Nutrition Facts section. In both it is mentioned as 4g sugar. only difference is brown sugar contain molasses.

Is there any real health benefits from taking brown sugar instead of white one. Also the taste of brown sugar here is different from what we get in India. Is there any health benefit difference between brown sugar in India and US?

WHITE SUGAR IS THE MAIN CULPRIT FOR INCREASE IN DIABETES PATIENTS

Natural Brown Sugar is a golden brown sugar loaded with the richness of tropical sugarcane flavor. It has a rich brown color ranging from @ 8,000 - 11,000 ICUMSA. Produced by a specialized co-crystallization process to provide consistent flavor, color, and soft texture, it has moist fine crystals making it ideal for creaming and simple to use.

    Why is it healthy?
Natural Brown Sugar is processed the natural way--completely free from any harmful chemicals such as phosphoric acid, formic acid, sulphur dioxide, preservatives, or any flocculants, surfactants, bleaching agents or viscosity modifiers.
Natural Brown Sugar has 11 calories/ 4 grams (1tsp). It is also nutritionally rich & retains all natural mineral & vitamin content present inherent in sugarcane juice. Details shown in nutrition chart below--

    Applications--
Natural Brown Sugar is good for gingerbread, mincemeat, baked beans, pudding and flans. It imparts depth of treacle flavor to fruitcakes, Christmas puddings and treacle biscuits and a crunchy caramel tone to chutneys, barbecue sauces and hot cereals such as porridge.
Its natural moistness and deep, rich molasses flavor makes it ideal for full-flavored or savory recipes. Use it in brownies, coffee or chocolate cakes, fudge, BBQ sauce, marinades, sweet and sour sauce, and pancake syrups. It adds an interesting flavor when stirred into coffee, espresso or tea!

White Sugar was Introduced in India by Britishers in the second half of 18th Century by starting a sugar mill and, forced to be consumed to Govt servants and natives since the production was for far more required than for the Britishers. We Indians used to have Cane sugar in brown form earlier. The incidence of Diabetes was in far lesser percentages before introduction of white sugar. In fact, we are looking at a number of 10 crores confirmed diabetes patients by the year 2014 as per Indian Govt figures.

Hi, Please donot confuse Brown Sugar with Vellam(Jaggery)...I haven't found an american equivalent to Jaggery, only thing I found that closely matches Jaggery is Turbinado sugar..once again, both are not the same...Going back to Brown Sugar, it is manufactured by adding a little bit of Molasses to regular white crystalline sugar...Molasses is the unrefined byproduct from sugarcane sugar processing...By unrefined, I mean 'still contains the minerals that are removed from white sugar while refining/cleaning/whitening'...So adding a bit of molasses , makes brown sugar, a teenzy weenzy bit better than regular white sugar...Turbinado sugar, on the other hand is unrefined cane sugar..so it will have all the necessary minerals in it...Having said that, I have to add turbinado sugar is costly :( but definitely better than white/brown sugar....
