Hullo!
I like reading tamil books. There are many writers i like. Among old , i like Shivashankari best of all. And of course Sujata, Indira Parthasarathi, Anuradha Ramanan and many.
Among newer writers, I like Jayamohan's writings, stories, articles all. He is very talented because he writes serious and good stuff in both Malayalam and Tamil.
First time i heard about him when his most important book "Vishnupuram" was released. Every magazine put a review. Many people said they did not understand anything. Some people said he is only "pseudo" trying to act like intellectual like Janakiraman and Jeyakanthan.
And many tamil press people dont like him because he is very frank and even rude when talking about some tamil works. They think a malayalee has no business to come and find fault with us and so always attacking him. ( quite recently, he wrote satire on MGR and Shivaji in his own internet page and Anantha Vikatan attacked him and made big issue)
I had bought vishnupuam that time itself and tried to read. But did not understand at all even three chapters so i closed it. First of all , his tamil language is so strange not at all like the kind of writing we are used to reading in general novels. It is Nagarkoil tamil plus " pin-naveenathuvam" tamil used by radical poets.
Then one person advised me to start reading his simpler writings. iN Anantha Vikatan he was writing "Sanga Chitrangal" and some short stories which are easy to understand. I started with that, then read his smaller books " Rubber" , "Kanyakumari", "Pin Thodarum Nizhalin Kural" and "Kaadu" and Short story collection "Nizhal Veli Kathaigal". And many of his articles.
Only after becoming comfortable with his style and language only i started Vishnupuam again. Then i became like addiction ! The book is a kind of searching for truth in many philosophies . His marxist and atheist ideas clash with deeper spiritual feelings. It is heavy reading. And a fat book also. So have to go slowly one chapter per day. I am reading it second time and still finding new thoughts in it.
If you have read Vishnupuram please tell what you like in it, which character you like i will like to discuss.
