Default Re: SSN for L2 Visa holders

Hi drizn,

I had similar problem so the delay in getting my SSN. We went to the Indian consulate in SFO and asked for a birth certificate ( for 20$). They issued us a birth certificate ( but it looks diff in format) wherein they mentioned that " as per the entries made in the PP no.......I belong to .....(place)".

Im sure the Indian consulate will have some solution for you. You first send an email to the consulate mentioning abt your requirement and they will suggest the suitable form to be filled up.

The website of sfo consulate is http://www.cgisf.org/

hope this helps,
vani.

Hi drizn,

I had replied in another thread abt your issue in 'immigration' forum. Have a look at it. I too had a similar prob but it is sorted out now.

You cannot work with an ITIN ( this number itself means you are disabled from working and this is only a tax idenitification num which is given for tax purposes when your hubby files tax returns)
You need to hv a valid SSN and EAD to work legally in US.

Hi Vani,

Thanks a ton dear, I dont know how to thank U 4 this, I shall definitely try this option, it might just work out 4 me & I'll let U know if it does but still thanks a lot 4 the information.
So can this consulate really give me a birth certificate & is it that after that I dont have to show the marriage certificate 4 SSN? How would they beleive that the person on passport & that on the marriage certificate is the same? Also do U have any idea how long this whole process takes?

Hi drizn,

I will tell u what happened for me so that u will get an idea.

I had similar prob with my first name. So the USCIS at SanJose asked for birth certificate. When we said , in the BC , we have only a kids name and gender and not the name ( if it is not decided at the time of birth), the manager there did not hear this and said they go by the documents.
My hubby then mailed to SFO consulate who then mailed us that we have to fill out some form and pay 20USD. We did that and drove down to SFO consulate and it was done in a jiffy and we collected the BC the same evening.
We then presented this at USCIS at Sanjose and ding! my name was corrected. The certificate issued by consulate will have both first name and last name. But thats ok. Its a standard document issued by the consulate and vouches for both first name and last name foolproof.

Reg your query, How wud they believe that the person holding PP and marriage certificate is same? See dear, our PP was issued after all due verification and even the Marriage certificate is a proof of a marriage registered. So, no way the consulate has reason to not believe and any certificate issued by indian consulate ( with due stamps) will be accepted at all American offices.

Try to complete your 50 posts here ASAP so that you can get more personal attention to imp queries, bcos everyone may not be browsing all sections everyday.

Hope i helped u, let me know when you get your job done.

Hi Vani,

Appreciate all ur help from the core. At 1st after reading ur earlier msg n visiting the website of the consulate I got no idea whether this can work out.
When I visited the contacts page on the website, there were many contacts mentioned there. I tried ringing them up but there was no response. Then I sent a mail on 2 id's , 1 was that of the vice consulate n the 2nd was a general enquiry. Well I mailed on both & mentioned my query in detail. Now I got a response from both. The vice consulate said "We go by the name, as given on the Indian Passport. Regarding your problems with SSN, you need to sort it out with them yourself." And the general enquiry said this ". And I received another mail reply from the general enquiry that said "Why don't you apply for a marriage certificate here. Your surname will be mentioned the way it is in your passport. This is assuming your husband's name is on your passport.
Now I dont know what I need to do. Does this mean that inspite of having a marriage certificate, they can issue a new one 4 me?

Hi drizn,

First tell me which surname is on your PP (whether ur father's family name or husband's name)?

If your PP has your husband's surname (which is missing on the Marriage certificate),then its better to go with the 2nd option and get a new marriage certificate wherein the consulate mentions that the person holding so/so PP and MC is the same.
Once you get this new MC, this will hold good for future correspondences. You just keep the old one with you.

I too have my old BC( issued by municipal authorities) and the new one issued by Consulate.

Dont go the VC, first sort your name clearly on all the primary documents and then go to SSN office. They will see all the certificates and then everything will be done accordingly. DOnt worry, this may take time but it will be done.

vani.

Hi Dear,

Well its my father's family name on the passport. The only difference is that on the marriage certificate the family name isnt there. So I mailed to the general enquiry again yesterday & they've asked 4 an amt of $30, $10 for adding my husbands name on the passport & $20 4 a new marriage certificate. I hope this time my problem gets sorted out, all thanks 2 U dear 4 guiding me....never knew this was possible. Appreciate ur help.

Hi Vani,

Sorry about the delayed reply...Yes, I did get my SSN before I got my EAD...I had applied for my EAD first but by the time it came, I learnt that I could get my SSN without EAD by juz producing my I94,passport and marriage certificate...
