Procedure/Questions on Passport Renewal in US

hello ladies,

Currently i am on H4 and my Passport is getting expired by dec08. I got my passport in Tatkal, so validity was only 5 years.
Now i got a doubt that whether i have to apply for new passport or validity extension?
since i am on H4, do i need to send any legal copies like my husband's I797. Because in the indian embassy website, proof of prsence they were asking. Proof of presence means my visa and I94 is enough?

Please ladies, if nayone has applied for passport in us, let me know the details.

as you are in US..look for an indian embassy near your city (i think chicago has the Indian embassy office where you can apply for your passport extension..) showing the old passport and also sending your husbands I-797 will expedite the process.

my friend got her new passport in chicago just with in 4 hours...(hers also expired and she applied for a new one..)

I have verified in website, since i am in Ohio this will come under Newyork office. I have to apply there only. So i thought of sending it through post.
If we go directly we can carry all the docs. But if we are sending in post, we have to send all the required docs.

i will wait till next week. May be some will give response.

I guess you should get an extension of ur passport as gratis. You needn't pay any fee, just submit the 'extension of short validity passport' form, duly filled.

The minimum requirments could be ur H4 petition copy notarized and proof of residence (drivers license, state id or utility bill) copy notarized.

Hi Dear friends,

Myhubby has renewed his Passport(India) in Newyork 2weeks back. Everything went good. But we got new passport number in renewed passport. Does they give new number in renewed passport?

They have stapled both old and new passport. If we were asked to give Photocopy of passport, does we need to take copy of all 36pages in old and new passport?

Actually the old passport number will be printed on the new passport..when i came back from india witha new passport(old passport attached) the immigration officer checked my new one and stamped on the new passport and stamped I-94 in the new one.
I have no idea on photocopy..though i have both..scanned..

Yes, your new passport will have a new number. Always carry both passports with you while travelling. The new passport copy should suffice if you are asked for a copy.
