Question Does anybody have a OCI?

Does anybody have a OCI? I am wondering this because we are planning on getting one for me and the kids. I have some questions about it, and I'm not able to verify them on the Consulate website. Please let me know if you know anything about owing property in India with a OCI and having a Bank acct.

Thanks

Hello,

We all have OCI. I think with OCI, you are allowed to own property in India. zHowever, if you are buying land, please be aware that if it is a farm land, then i think people with OCI cannot buy it. ( Do confirm this).

We do have the option of NRE and NRO accounts with Indian banks no problems.
I hope some one with more info on this can give details

Vandhana

Hi,

I have OCI. It is fairly easy to get OCI from the local embassy here, provided you have all the documents available in order for them to process without any further querries.

The BIGGEST benefit of OCI is you can stay in India (even foreign citizens/passport holders) as long as you want (previously the maximum of 6 months and if you need to stay beyond 6 months, you have to goto the police department to register with them by providing the proof of your extension) without informing Govt/passport office/police department etc.,

Being OCI, you are as good as any Indian citizen living in India, except that you don't have voting rights during election- which I guess we don't care as whoever you are going to elect will only do the worst for the country as no body is patriotic enough to do anything good for the country to make India an an envy in the eyes of the international community.

Regarding other issues like children schooling, banking, realestate purchase/sale etc., you are practically an Indian citizen.

Since your mail didn't have any specific question, I could only provide all the general stuff regarding OCI.

Regards,
GPriya

Hey Desi Princess,

Oops.. u did have specific question. Well...to deal with real estate sale/purchase, you must have PAN card (Permanent Account Number) without which nowadays no transaction can take place. Apply and get PAN card first and you can deal with anything in India.

Take care,
GPriya

Dear GPriya /Vandhana,
Thank You for the info on OCI. I have some more questions. Say, if we have OCI , our children who were born in USA would still get OCI only after their 18 yeras right? I heard from my friends that we can apply for OCI for the children only after 18 years. So, in that case, My understanding is, even if we get OCI and go back to India, for children schooling in India would they be considered as NRI (Provided the parents have OCI / or as Indian citizens) and the fees would be more in school and college. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks
Priya

Dear Priya,

Kids of parents of Indian Origin, born in the USA are eligible to get the OCI. Both my kids were born here and they have the OCI. When you apply for the OCI, apply as a family , there should not be any problem.

Dear Vandhana,
Thank you for the information. I didnt knew this before that we can apply as a family so that kids younger than 18 also get OCI. Thanks again.

Regards
Priya
