Default TT injection during Pregnancy

Hello Everybody,

I am 27 weeks pregnant. I live in Singapore.I heard that in india doctors will give TT injection for pregnant ladies. But in Singapore my doctor didnot mentioned anything about that. Can anybody please tell me why this TT injection is given to Pregnant ladies? is it Compulsory? Shall i need to talk to my doctor about this? When i browsed about TT injection in internet i got this information

"the vaccine is given straigt into your muscles in the upper arm or thigh of the leg. it is to prevent tetanus (lock jaw)usually caused from punturing the skin with rusty objects. IT SHOULD NOT BE GIVIN WHEN PREGNANT UNLESS CLEARLY NEEDED so please consult with your dr. on why he/she has decided to give it to you while preg. if you have not had any exposure to tetanus, then please do not have the vaccine unless it is essential to your child's well being, as it is not very safe for the baby. it also may contain murcury which is harmful to your child."

Is this True? is this harmful to the baby? bec my Mother-in-law is forcing me to ask doctor for TT injection. She always tell me that doctors in INDIA will give injection to pregnant ladies it is compulsory .so ask your doctor. But My doctor never mention anything about this Injection. what shall i do? please advice me friends

Thanks in advance
Neeru

Hi Neeru,

Your mother-in-law is right. I had taken the TT injection during my seventh and eight month.

This is to prevent you from any illness like fever or any other serious illiness which can put your child at risk and cannot be treated at this crucial stage of pregnancy. Since there will be no medication advised after seventh month doctors will give the TT injection.

It is safe and suggested by doctors everywhere.

Tetanus is not routinely administered in India if you have injured yourself on the roads, or scrapped your knee in a park or other public places. When you are not pregnant, I mean. Lot of doctors do, some don't. That's why the recommendation to administer TT to all pregnant women.
In my cases, I had received 7 shots of Tetanus as the combination for Diphtheria, Tetanus and pertusis in the primary shots and as tetanus boosters later. This is the recommended dosage from Serum Institute India website
Quote:
DOSAGE
The full basic course of immunisation against tetanus toxoid consists of three primary doses of 0.5ml at least four weeks apart, followed by booster doses at 18 months, 5 years, 10 years and 16 years and then every 10 years.
While, my primary doses and boosters were in order, I had not received a booster in the 10 years before I got pregnant. Therefore I was given one shot at 6 months. If you have received booster shots in the last 10 years before you got pregnant and had received all 7 doses of tetanus before you turned 16, it is unlikely to be administered to you.
And yes it has Thiomersal as the preservative and mercury is a known toxin. In your place I would check with my parents to see if my boosters were in order. If it was not I will present the information before the doctor and ask her for her/his advice. If your shots are all up to date and if you think you have not sustained an injury in a public place within the last six months, then you may in the clear and the vaccine is not needed. Your OB then is doing the right thing. Hope this helps.

You have highlighted that the mother is being vaccinated from fever etc... What my Pead explained is that TT is exclusively for the fetus and booster doses are given after birth...

It is a little different in USA TT injections are not given to pregnant women but it is given after the baby is born. This is what my Doctor said when inquired about TT injection.
