    Gestation Diabetes

    Hi ladies,

I am 29 weeks pregnant and I am having Gestation Diabetes. Got to know about it only today. Really concerned!!! I am yet to meet the nutritionist and should also start using a glucometer to test my sugar levels after every meal. I know with proper diet (reducing carbohydrates) and exercise it can be in control but still worried.

It would really be glad to know much more from any one of you in terms of diet/exercise.

    Regards,
    Leo

    Quite Common

    Hi Leo,

GD is becoming quite common now in pregnant women. Nothing to worry about. Lots of women with GD have given birth to healthy normal babies. I have a detailed plan that i will PM you and you can also ask me any questions that you have. Please go through the Pregnancy forums since i recall seeing a few other moms posting about the same topic.

    Hello Neeti,

Look in the parenting and kids thread, there are a few posts from before that deal with GD. I will also pm you a list of foods that you can have and avoid.

    Dear Leo

I had gestational diabetes and hypertension during my pregnancy from the 7 mnth onwards.I was put on insulin injections around the same time. Please do not worry.Although my son was born at 36 weeks,it was more due to my hypertension that GD.He was 2.58 kgs when he was born and he was considered a healthy baby. Since he was born after 36 weeks and since he weighed above 2.5 kgs,he was not even considered as premature. You will have to follow strict diet and do atleast 30 minutes walking everyday.

    Re: Gestation Diabetes

    Dear Leo

Congrats on the pregnancy!!!! Do not worry much. I was diagnosed with GD when I was 29 weeks pregnant. I had a normal healthy baby.

I was provided a diet plan for 1800 cal/day. The sample prescribed menu for a day is at the end of the post. I kept the carbohydrate choice as the key and varied the menu based on labels. I am a strict vegeterian and replaced meat with cheese or other veg options.

I had to monitor my blood sugar 4 times a day. The fasting was bad towards the end and I was prescribed a tablet called Glyburide instead of insulin.

This diet prevents you gaining more weight, which is very helpful when you want to loose the weight after the delivery :-D

    Note : 1 carb = 15g of carbohydrate.

    Breakfast Carb Choice Sample Menu

1 milk 1 1 cup milk or 1 cup plain yogurt
    1 bread/starch 1 1 slice bread or 1/2 unsweetened cereal

    Re: Diet for pregnant women

    Hello,
I followed a good diet during my both the pregnancies.
My both kids were above 9lbs when they were born.

    1. Calcium -- low fat milk, yogurt
    2. Fiber -- green salad , cucumber, carrot, fresh vegetables sabzi
    3. Protien - egg (only white part), dals, fish
    4. Plenty of water and orange juice.
    5. few dry nuts (almonds, walnuts and pista)
    6. Chapathi and little rice.

    Breakfast : cereals with milk.
After 1-2 hrs : I used to eat indian breakfast (upma , dosa etc)

Around 12 noon : green salad
    Around 1pm lunch - rice
    Walk for 10 mins

Around 3 pm : dry nuts, fruits

Around 4 PM : do pregnacy aerobics and yoga (alternative days) for 20 mins
Around 5 pm : Milk (no coffee, tea)

    Around 7-8 pm : dinner
    Walk for 10 mins

    9PM : go to bed.

Keeping your stomach empty may cause nauseous.

    I reduced salt intake.

According to the baby's growth in every week , I used to follow the diet.

Eg. 15 week : baby's brain development : I used to eat fish
12 week : baby's eye development : I used to eat lots of carrots
I monitored the weight every week.

"What to expect while your expecting" is a very good book to follow.

There are couple of websites to follow your weight and baby's growth.

    Hope this might of useful,
    Punitha
