Default 13 weeks pregnant and diagnosed with low thyroid - Please advise

Hi everyone!

This is my first message posted on Indusladies. I am about 13 weeks pregnant. This is going to be our first baby and I was excited all this while. On friday, I got a call from my GP saying that my thyroid levels were pretty low as was seen on the blood work results. I had no idea about all this. Being weekend, I cannot get any appointment from any endocrinologist since they would come in only on monday. I am scared to death after reading many articles on the Internet on low thyroid levels which in turn affects the baby's development, IQ levels etc. I am very much worried that my thyroid levels may adversely affect our baby. Although at first, I wanted to have a drug-free pregnancy, now all that I am concerned about is my baby's health.

We will definitely try and get an appoinment as soon as possible but my question is if I take thyroid supplement now, am I going to give birth to a healthy baby? Is my baby going to be okay? Any body had any insight on this? Please help me. I am so scared that now I keep crying all day long.

hi Daisy...
first of all congrats on your pregnancy and second first relax...keep all your tensions away....taking thyroid supplement is not at all going to affect your baby...but it will help both of you to have a happy life ahead. get an appointment with best specialist as soon as possible...follow doctors advice...doctor may suggest you to take some food items specially and to avoid few things to eat ...you follow that, diet is going to help you a lot to overcome this problem and if you don't take any tension you will help your baby a lot...so be happy take medicines without forgetting and follow doctors advice...this is very common many ladies face this and they get healthy and happy baby ...cheers..smile..

Hi Anu,

For a moment when i saw your message on the front page i thought it was you. Ilina keeps remembering Swayam. Lovely meeting you at the meet have not seen you back on the thread so thought i will reply here. Will get your number from Sylvia and call.

Daisy really good advice by Anu. All the best and do take care all will be well don't worry to much and just keep telling yourself all will be fine and believe in that it surely will be fine. Just be super positive and keep talking to baby and saying hey little one we will be fine together and i am waiting to see you .
Do take care and our prayers are with you to enjoy your pregnancy and all goes well

best wishes
preethi

Hey thanks Padma, Anu and Preethi! Your words truly relieved me of half of my tension. I will definitely try to keep happy for my baby's sake. I will keep you posted on this once I see an endocrinologist.

Indusladies truly served as home away from home to me! I had not even discussed this problem of mine with my family back in India thinking they will get worried unnecessarily but all of you really helped me get some moral support. Thanks again!

hi daisydee

you are most welcome.its my pleasure.
what u said is so right that you have to be happy for ue baby's sake.
no matter what ever comes through.

n i want to ask wheather u diagnosed by hypothyroidism orhyperthyroidism.
there are these 2 types of thyroid disorders.

but i'm sure its hypothyrodism.

u dont have to worry about at all .u just have to take a tablet daily and dont worry ur baby will be perfectly al right.

so cheer up just think about ur baby n keep smiling

regards

anu

Hi Anu,

I am detected with hypothroidism. I can get an appointment with an endocrinologist only after about 10 days since all the others are booked for 2 months. This is the only quickest one that I could get.

My question to you is were you detected with thyroid problem prior to your pregnancy or only during the first trimester? Did you have any symptoms for the same? How do you make sure that the baby is doing okay? I may be wrong but I guess we cannot find out about brain development until the baby is born, right? And even after the baby is born, do we have to take any extra precautions to see that the baby's thyroid is normal?

I have read articles on the Internet which talk about loss of pregnancy due to low thyroid etc. This really scares me. Although I am trying not to think about this at all.

Regards,
Daisy

hi daisydee

how r u doing ?

well ill tell u in the hypothyroidism symptoms are like gaining weight, tiredness, hair fall,
dry skin, huskyness in voice n lots more.

its not necessory tht u get all the symptoms . sometimes u can just get only 1 of it.

diagonosis is T3,T4 and TSH test.

so now u know u have hypothyroidism u just have to follow the medication.

and get it checked regularly and so u will come to know its normal or not.
and accordingly the dosage of medicine will increase or decrease.

for the baby's dovlopment u get the sonography done ,you will come to know everything.

initially when i was pregnant i used to worry a lot like u.

but believe me its just nothing to be scared of.

but make sure u follow the doctor's advice.
just be happy
have faith in god everything will be fine.

love

anu

Hey Daisydee,

I also have under active thyroid........if u've already been diagonosed with hypothyroidism, and not getting an apt with endocerinologist, approach yr primary health care physician with yr blood report, he will give u a presciption for reqd medicine for the time being

if u dont have a primary health care physician (PHP), take one, you may get PHP comparatively faster,

hope this helps!

Good Luck
