Default First visit to OB/GYN after pregnancies good news!!

Hi Friends!!
You just confirmed your pregnancy by doing a HPT and you are soooo excited to know that there is a life growing within you. But you are bit bothered also with your pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness the most classic one and what not. Then you fix an appontment with OB/GYN.

First Visit to OB/GYN a blend of lot more excitement, some doubts, and of course a bit of scary thoughts. How was your very first visit to a OB/GYN lets share our experiences to increase knowledge of new moms 2 be like me.

My first appointment with GYN is on 11th Feb I am experiencing all above mentioned feelings. And I dont know how she will examine me, what is she going to tell me , What should I ask her, How should I know that she is a good doctor. Sooooo many questions are there on my mind. I m hoping and praying to God that everything is fine with my baby and its a healthy conception.

I was planning to start this thread after my first visit but couldnt wait . I will definitely share my experience of first visit to doctor. Hope to hear from you all ...

Thanks n Take good care of yourself and life within you.

Hi vnbaby!

So u've fixed the appointment! Thats gud!

I can very well understand your feelings as I was in a very similar situation just weeks before! Just like you even I was worried if it is a healthy conception and wanted to confirm it immediately from a doctor. Just as you mentioned in your other post, even i was worried that it should not be ectopic etc etc. You know what, sometimes too much information is also a problem. I guess you are browsing too much to get more info. Dont worry, conception and pregnancy are a very natural phenomenon which happens in every woman's life, so will it be in our case too...Thats how I convinced myself.

I felt so jittery abt the first GYN visit. In fact, I was more worried whether she was going to perform an internal exam. But many of our IL friends (adhusmom esp) here reassured that most doctors generally dont perform internal exam until the final trimester. Still, i was worried and terrified. What happened was, she asked my full history, medical history, allergies, family medical history, etc etc. She took my BP and you know it was 170/something (out of fear of an internal exam!). But she did not do any internals, instead she just pressed around my pelvic area to examine..I was so much relieved.

She asked to see the home pregnancy strip which I did that showed positive pregnancy. Unfortunately, I had thrown it away. So she took another home pregnancy kit and confirmed it. But she asked me to take a scan as I mentioned abt the abdominal cramps to her. So that was abt my first visit. As I told you before, I had to take subsequent scans for proper visualization and I am still waiting with fingers crossed for the scan next week. I hope and pray everything should be normal. I strongly feel everything will be normal. Will let you know what happens.

Dont worry too much. Dont browse too much. It is a natural phenomenon which will happen naturally. God has programmed our bodies in such a way. So dont worry much okay? Btw, whats your real name...Itwould be nice to know people with their real names..

cheers,
Radhee/Radhika.

Hi Radhee & Rajmiarun!!

Thanks for your advices. These words are really like healing ointments . Feeling much better now.

Radhee you wont believe I was telling my husband the same thing like you told me that too much information is not good..... I think I am getting worried uselessly. But not only for my pregnancy, I always search internet a lot about health. I always do my homework before visiting to my doctor and try to arm myself with knowledge.

Anyways this fear of ectopic pregnancy is not just like that actually it is due to a incident happened with one of my colleague. She was a senior of mine and was married and I was unmarried that time so she didnt used to talk about such kinda matters with us(jnrs). But we were noticing that she is coming to office with a hot water bag since 2-3 days and was in accute pain. We told her not to come and attend office if she is having so much pain in her abdomen but because our boss was very strict so she was regularly attending office. One day she couldnt attend office I asked my other seniors they said she is not well. Then after somedays leave she came....as we all were concerned so asked her then she told us abt her ectopic pregnancy which was in its advanced stage when they contacted their doctor she told her that it could have bursted. But thank god she went to her doctor on time. After this incident I came to know about what is ectopic pregnancy. Since then I am quite afraid of it .

I am praying to god that everything is fine. And never waited for Monday like I am waiting now . I am also worried about internal check-up but you know it depends upon doc to doc. Your doctor didnt do it ....Great!! I am expecting the same with my doctor.

Thanks you told me about keeping HPT. I did it twice , I threw away the first one but I am having the 2nd one but lines on it are quite faded by this time. So I think it would be better if I would do it when my doctor will ask me. And as you told me It is good to visit a doctor on 40-45 day I will be visiting her on 41st day. Is it ok? I mean if I go for a scan. Can you please explain to me what is polycistic ovaries exactly mean. I have included you also in my prayers. Lets pray together that everything will be absolutely fine.

Thanks Rajmiarun.Yeah I got an appointment but it took me whole week to search and decide a good GYN and I missed India sooooooo much that I was telling my husband I would have visited GYN for thousand many times if I was in India this time. Because there you know so many people and relatives they tell you abt good doctor even if you dont ask them. And I think its human nature to think always negative when something positive is going to happen. I am trying really hard not to have those kinda thoughts in my mind but......... I will soon be posting my first visit to GYN in detail.

Thanks
Vnbaby

Hi vnbaby,

I guess it will be a right time to go now as you are 40+ days. But I dont think your doctor will ask for a scan imediately unless she suspects any problem. She may ask you to take a scan after 2 or more weeks. Do u still have that abdominal cramping? Some doctors do not trust the HPT and so they ask a urine or serum beta HCG test to be done. It will show the level of HCG in the blood/urine.

Polcystic ovaries are a big problem for many women these days. The ovaries will have cysts that are follicles, fluid-filled sacs that contain immature eggs. If a girl has polycyctic ovaries, then it is a big struggle to get pregnant in the first place. The most common symptom of this is irregular periods. But amazingly, I never even missed a single period in my life and I got pregnant as soon as we attempted. So this diagnosis was rather a shock. It seems polycystic ovaries can cause abortions in pregnant women. Thats the reason the doctor has put me on metformin and other progesterone supplements.

Apart from that, my problem now is, since the first scan did not show the gestational sac, the radiologist suggested followup scan in 10 days to rule out ectopic pregnancy. (The purpose of this early scan was to rule out polycystic ovaries that the doctor suspected I may have). This scan did show the hormonal changes in the uterus though, like endometrial thickening etc. In the second scan, the gestational sac was visible but he could not see the fetal pole. So again he added a sentence in the report "followup scan in 3 weeks to rule out ectopic pregnancy." So thats the reason i am actually anxious for my next scan. But if it was ectopic, then I would have severe pain, but I dont have anything like that as of now. Plus my serum HCG levels are quite high indicating a healthy pregnancy. So i strongly feel it should be a normal healthy pregnancy. (I didnt tell u this before as you were already worrying unnecessarily abt ectopic).

Fine then..dont worry, your gynec visit will be a breeze. Write down a list of questions you may have to ask her. She may give you some pregnancy brochures or tell you what to eat, what not to. So take it down if needed. All the best and tell me what happens at the visit.

Cheers,
Radhee.

Hi Radhee!!

Thanks for your detailed mail.

My appointment with doc is tomorrow will tell you everything in detail. You know what its good that you are in India here in US there are so many tantrums in medical system. Unlike India they dont tell you the results of your tests or scans the same day or the next day. They keep these reports with them and you have to visit them to know the results. And they charge for every visit. and many other problems are there.

I am surprised to see that your case is quite similar to mine like I have never missed a period in life though my periods got irregular after marriage like sometimes I had less flow or long menstrual cycle but never missed them. And I also got pregnant as soon as we attempted and when I missed my last period, Initially i thought this must be a long cycle so I will be having periods in 3-4 days. I am having abdominal cramps so I took them as PMS. But after 5 days of wait when I did HPT it showed positive results. That was really really surprising for me because we were thinking that it will take at least 2-3 months.

Hence it is unbelievable for both of us and thats why we are worried accordingly because we are not expecting this to happen so early. I am feeling all the pregnancy symptoms like missed period, cramps, tender and swollen breast, insomnia, slight nausea(not worst like morning sickness), so more or less I started believing that I am pregnant but my husband he always ask me are you sure you are pregnant, do you think we should trust HPT. Now slowly he has started realising and believing that I am pregnant. So this is a funny part of my pregnancy. Infact I never have liked kids but my husband is crazy abt babies and kids but as soon as I got pregnant I dont know how,...why I feel that I am deeply in love with my unborn, unseen baby. This is really a miracle for me.

Now I hope God will take care of this miracle happening inside me.
