Hi: Congrats n best wishes to all the expectant mothers!! I'm 11 weeks pregnant now, I wanted to know if it is safe to eat yogurt during pregnancy. The doctor advices me to eat yogurt but I was told by some women that it leads to white patches on the child's skin. Can someone please clarify? Thanks, Nikhath

dear nikhath, welcome to pregnacy club & congrats on ur pregnancy. as other friends pointed out listen to doctor. yoghurt is good for u especially in pregnancy.for one it helps to meet the daily calcium requirement . it also helps to reduce UTI which is very common during pregnancy. as mom2be said if u r able to digest it,then take it daily or else start when nausea etc reduce after 12-14 weeks . pragati

Hi Congrats.... White patches is due to food poisioning. If you are little sensitive then be careful with the mixing of different food items...like curd with fish. There is nothing wrong with curd alone. Rdgs Priyanka

I was following this thread for a few days now and I thought that what the previous readers have suggested with regard to following doc's advice was a good one. But now unfortunately I have to refute a notion about food poisoning and mixing yogurt and fish - white patches as you call them are simply a form of dermatitis which could be multifactorial like infections, worms, hormones etc depending on the age and condition of the patient. With regard to mixing any food with anything there are NO scientific rules!! As long as every component of the food is not stale you should be fine. One must remember that irrespective of what combination of food we swallow everything does indeed gets mixed in the stomach and its up to the physiological process of digestion that breaks the food to simpler molecules which can be absorbed. So fear not and eat any properly prepared and stored food. Food poisoning itself is a totally different issue (due to microbes growing in food) and I don't think you need to worry yourself about it as long as you prepare and store food in hygienic conditions. Milk and milk products are vital sources of calcium so make sure you can take 3 - 4 servings per day in any tolerable form. Hope this clears your doubt. -L.
