I think the best gift that you can give to your child on his/her first b'day is to invest a certain amount of money in their name which maybe useful after say 15-17 yrs down the line for their education. You very well know the inflation rate.

Maybe you are really well-off today but no one knows about tomorrow and its always good to secure the future of your child rather than spending in materialistic things which he/she may now even appreciate at this point of time.

Also you can celebrate your childs b'day (if you want to) at some orphanage or at some old-age home and bring happiness in their life even though it is for a short time. This will also imbibe good values in your child.

This is my personal opinion.

Since it is his first birthday. and he will already be getting lot of toy from others. as parents you can start some investment which would be handy at 18/21. (an one time investment or an yearly investment..every birthday...)

As Roopa and Shanvy have said you could make an investment which will yield result when your kid is 18/21. Apart from that if your kid is a baby girl you could buy some gold jewellery or if you are not interested in jewellery you could buy some gold coins too. You could buy gold coins for every birthday and when you get her married you could convert them into the jewels of her choice. As the gold coin comes in various denominations you can buy anything as per your financial situation.

For my sons first birthday we gave money to poor people and also cooked and gave food for the needy. for many years thats what we have done. My father and fatherinlaw invested a small amount of money.
