Hi, In the hospital you will be given form to register the birth of the baby. It helps if you have already decided the child's name. The hospital registrar will register the birth of the baby and send it for processing to the state. You will be given a form to apply for the SSN. This needs to be submitted with in 12 weeks. There was a charge of $12 for us here in VA. So you need to apply for birth certificate, SSN and Passport. Please apply for the passport asap... we applied when my son was almost 5 months old. It took almost 3 months for it to reach us. We were advised that it takes almost 13 - 17 weeks now for normal processing. If you are plannning to visit India some time after the birth then you need the passport. Also apply for the PIO card or the dual citizenship card after getting passport. If the parents are citizens then I think you apply for the dual citizenship... We are still Green card holders so we applied for PIO card. We are visiting india in dec and only now applied for the PIO card. It is supposed to reach us by end of Nov... we should have applied sooner. You need to add the child to your medical insurance. This can be done with in 30 days after birth. Call your medical insurance and find out their procedure. These are the things we did after our son was born. Also if put some amount in your or your hubby's flexible health spending for the child. This is usually the time when employers expect you to update your enrollment to medical insurance, flexible health spending etc. You will have lots of doctor visits with the new baby... I recommend adding a minimun of $200.00 - discuss with your hubby. Gayathri Last edited by GayathriSundar; 1st November 2007 at 09:47 AM.

Hi Maha, Congratulations! I am assuming you are going to apply for an Indian passport in India. I am not sure of the procedures for Indian passports. Please inquire with the Indian Passport office. I guess you will need a passport with proper visa for your baby to accompany you back to UAE. Sorry for not being of much help here. Thanks Gayathri

Dear Maha You can apply for a passport for the baby soon after delivery with the Indian Passport office. You will need a passport size photo of the baby and I think birth cert.My sil in Dubai had done the same for both her kids born in India.

I am outside India and have to apply for the baby passport. I wonder how to take picture of such a small one. We cant take it out to the photo studio anyways. This might be a silly question, but people who have applied for passport, please do let me know

You can take the baby to the studio for the photo, that is what my sil did. They did have a hard time getting the baby to open her eyes for the photo, but the studio people have a way with this and it is best to go to a studio like Konica, for eg. since they are pros in this and also because they know the exact size for the visa photo.
