Flat buyers - please note

Hi all

I just want to put a few words to the people who are planning to buy an appartment. As you all know after the Bhuj earthquake India's zone map is revised and chennai falls in Zone III, ie moderate seicmic intensity. Hence it is mandatory now that all buildings should be designed and constructed as per seismic provisions. Some important points are

1. The building should not be provided with soft ground storey (or open ground storey which is used for car parking) because such buildings are vulnerable to earthquake.
2. Strong column weak beam concept should be followed
3. Increase ductility of columns and beams by providing suitable rods.
4. provide shear walls wherever necessary.

So check if the flat is designed as per the seismic provisions before buying
