Default Paintings : Suggestions for Fabric Painting on Silk Saree

Hi,
I haven't done fabric painting. I would like to try a small motif on a kanchi silk saree. Please let me know whether paint will stay good on the saree on a long run or will it fade after sometime? Please let me know the suggestion. I am planning to use camel brand metallic paints. Please let me know the durability. I will start my work after I hear from experts from the forum.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Visala,
Thanks for your suggestion. I will do that.
Since there are many experts doing fabric painting, let me know whether anyone has tried on kanchi silk.

hi lily
u can try the art and craft shop or art friends at takashimaya, u wl find special colours for painting on silk- u need paints with special pigments for silk as the regular fabric colours might spoil ur silk saree!
if i'm right there are silk colours in PEBEO brand which r v good. chk out at takashimaya and let me know.

hi lilly

If you use metallic colours do mix some fabric paints of the same colour with them...

There is a chance that metallic colours will get faded during washing them... I'll mix the small amount of fabric colours along with metallic ones...

Reverse iron them after 24 hours so they will never go off... This is my experience anyway lets hear from others...

happy painting....

hi lilly,
as suggested by another friend here, its better to test the colur on the other end of the sari .metallic colour do tend to spread a bit. Also it becomes stiff once dry..Silk colours from Pebeo or from fevicryl is an excellent choice, but only disadvantage is that each motif has to be first drawn with silk liner or gutta,so that the colour do not spread.BUT the net result is amazing.
hope this will help.
regards,
sumitha

Thanks Bhuvana and Sumitha,

As you guys mention that metallic paint tend to fade, let me try with camlin fabric paint itself, probably can add two colors to get a mix.

I am planning to use fabric paint to do leaf pattern in the border of a saree. I add little bit of water to get a free flow of painting and hence easy to paint too.

I still have some doubts as below:
1. Do I have to use gutta?
2. As outline I am planning to use gold (The stick ones available in India)
3. Do I have to iron immediately after 24 hours or can I do it once the whole saree border is done.

Please excuse with my querries as I am doing fabric painting for the first time on a kanchi saree. Thanks again.

Regards

hi lilly,
I would like to clarify somethings.
* Please do not get confused with silk paint & fabric paints. both are entirely different concepts. while fabric paint holds to the surface of the fabric the silk paint actually dyes the fabric (& you need some good practise).
* while it is entirely your choice of type of paint you want to use I would suggest you use fabric paints on kanchi saree as silk ones are better on other type of softer silks.
* which ever you choose you first try both on scrap material first to get first hand experience before doing on the saree.
