I have made this one from an old cotton saree of my Mom, one can try this even on waste clothes like the ones from a tailoring shop.

Great work.Actually i wanted to start a thread regarding this same mat.I wanted to know the method.......like how much width has to be cut, how to start etc. It would be of great help for many of us, if u can post us the procedure step by step.Thankyou.Bye.

I think u have cut it into strips & made a plait & rolled it. Is it correct or else post the procedure.

Hi Prabha,
I want to know the measurement and how it is plaited,bcoz we need something to hold, i think , so that it will be easy for us to plait.I too know the method,but wanted to know exactly.

Hi Friends

This is how I did it

1. Cut an old saree into 6 inch width pieces. I got about 7 pieces. It will depend on the saree width.
2. Cut each 6 inch piece into 3 equal parts.
3. Tie up one end of the three pieces together.
4. Now tie up this end to a chair or you window or anything like that so that the tied portion is fixed.
5. Take 3 rubber bands, roll each of the strips so that only a small length is left behind for platting. This will avoid the twisting up of the three strips while you plait. As you reach the tied rubber band portion keep on loosening it a little for plaiting, continue till end.
6. Like this plait all the pieces
7. Roll up the plaited strips into desired shape. Oval, round or square.
8. Stitch the adjacent layers continuously and tightly. (Use a thicker thread so that it last long, I used the one used for tatting and knitting.)

Try to put the cut ends of the strips inside the plait to prevent the thread coming out later.
I have made by plaiting it tightly if you plait it a bit loose you will get a
bigger mat.
You can use any waste cloth like this by stitching them together into 3 strips of about 2 inches each.
Using different colored cloth will a give nice patterns.
