The chikan work is done on the reverse of the fabric with white thread, there is a special thread which is thicker than the embroidery/machine thread. The stitch used is not running stitch, sorry I don't remember the name all of a sudden. But the worked out design comes like cross on the reverse side and running on the other side.
I have not done, but my relative in Delhi does this and she told me all this.
