Hi talented ladies, please help me I am trying to learn to crochet, I got a hook and tried to make a baby beanie by looking at youtube videos and messed up.

I think its the yarn I have its not a soft one. Please suggest what hook size and what kind of yarn I should use ? Will I get it in walmart, since I'm only learning don't want to buy very expensive. Please give suggestions. Also if there are any other easy links you know from where I can learn basic crochet please post since I'm no good at arts etc. Do you think I'll be able to learn by looking at youtube videos?
