Design Care
Caring for your design is as important as the selection and placement. It wouldn't be a very good idea to get the design and then not take care of it! Follow these simple steps to get your henna design as dark as possible and keep it for as long as you can:
Skin should be clean, dry, and free of any lotions, creams, or oils. The paste is drawn on by the artist and left to dry.
1. Let the paste dry completely. This is noticeable when it is no longer shiny.
2. Apply lemon sugar mixture with a cotton ball to design, pushing down lightly (you don't want to smoosh part of it in case it's still wet).
3. Apply heat, either with a candle or a blow-dryer. Get it as hot as you can stand it without burning yourself.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you have approximately 10 layers of lemon sugar. This will take about an hour. During this time, it is IMPORTANT that you do as little as possible. Moving that part of your body too much will cause the design to crack and flake off. Some cracking is to be expected, though flaking is not. After you're sure the design is completely dry in all areas, you may press harder on the design to get it to stick to your skin better.
5. After a fresh coat of lemon sugar, wrap the design with cotton. This is achieved by unrolling 100% cotton balls into strips. Press the cotton strips onto the design, without it sliding around. Wrap this with an ace bandage or snug clothing for sleep. This will keep the design in place and protect clothing, bed clothes, and other areas of skin from getting stained. It will also keep it warm, so that the henna can stain effectively.
6. I recommend leaving the design on for at least 12 hours. It is easiest if you can sleep with it, since you won't be inhibited in your every day activities.
7. Unwrap the design and peel away cotton layer. Try and take as much of the paste with it as you can. Whatever is left can be scraped, picked, or wiped off. DO NOT USE WATER to take it off! This will only cause it to become lighter, and fade more quickly. I recommend using a cotton ball soaked with olive oil.
8. After all the paste is removed, put any kind of thicker oil on it, such as olive, essential, or vitamin E. Do not use scented body oils, sun block, or baby oil. Put this on anytime BEFORE and AFTER contact with water. This will block the skin from absorbing water and will also stop the natural exfoliation process of your skin.
9. The design will be somewhat light the first day - this is normal and varies from person to person. Keep it away from water - don't shower that area, wear gloves doing dishes, and keep oil on it.
10. After 24 hours the design will darken as a natural process of the henna. Color ranges from orange to red, to dark sienna brown. Color and length of stain will vary from person to person due to absorbency of the skin, where the design is located, and how well it is taken care of. Designs are darkest on the palm of the hand and bottom of the feet. They generally last 1 - 4 weeks. It will eventually fade away by itself.
