Thumbs down Craft Works : Coconut Engraving

Hi ladies,

Here I am posting one photo which Krishna took at the time of his cusin brother's Nichayadartham. We went to Bangalore to attend the function. When my co-sister showed all the items, which she purchased for the function, this coconut drawing attracted us very much.
She told that we can order for this and what ever design or picture you want, they will put that on a dry coconut. Really it is very good art. Is it not? And they are charging only Rs. 38/- per piece. And they deliver it with in a week it seems.
I want to know more about this. But I dont know the name of the art. She did this in Bangalore only. I searched in the net also. I could not get any information about this. Anybody can tell about this? Really want to have some pieces for me. Even want to know whether can we keep them in the Showcase? Please help me.
I dont know what they did with the coconuts after the function

It is a wonderful item for gifting and also to keep in weddings(in villayadal thattu)

I think it is available in KAIRALI handicraft showroom in Bangalore & Kerala.

Hi krishnaamma,

I had been to the thread today. This coconut engrave is done only in karnataka, that too specially they prepare in wedding occassions. On the coconut ,first they trace drawings (i.e. gods, pictures of wedding, names of bridge and bridegroom) many more and according to that they carve them with a spl blade. But it is not so easy to everyone (more practice is needed) coz one of my relatives in bangalore does it for spl functions and she takes orders for marriages.I tried it but I did not get it.

This is very compulsory to give to the bride in weddings and they keep all items in front of the bride (varapooja) day (we say in kannada ) previous day evening before the marriage day.Next day another one will give to bridegroom when he was going to kasiyatra.

If anyone interested in this they keep it in the showcases also for the rememberance.

I did not get the photo of that.Pl send again
Reply.....

bye,

sudha batni

hi sudha,

It was a must only in a particular community i think...nowadays others are following it as a fashion i suppose. before it was carving on the whole copra...special konkan coconuts i think....now i see the whole deskinned copra with some drawings with ink...

I have seen both the types. but they tend to shrink after few months...maybe now they are treated not sure..

if you have more details please share....

Krishnamma,

If you are not able to upload attachments (not only pictures) it means you have reached your allowed limit. it happened to me also... so i just had to go back and remove lot of my picture attachments though i did not want to..
but i am not sure if this is a good idea...let us wait for some relaxation on the limit or a some other solution on the same...

Dear shanthi,

If we remove some uploaded attachments, we are removing them from the forum itself. Is it not? I uploaded many pictures in fashion and how can I remove them? I am waiting for her reply. But I got this idea and asked Krish to upload that picture. thanks for your reply and helping me in this issue.
