It is quite important to know the facts of Diabetes, which will help to manage the condition in a better way. Here are some myths and facts about diabetes.

Myth: Diabetic people should not have sugar

Diabetic people need not always have a sugar-free diet. Having a healthy and balanced diet, that is low in sugar and fat is the essential thumb rule to manage diabetes. Diabetic people can still enjoy a good variety of foods as long they are eaten in moderation.

Myth: Diabetics cannot play any sport

False. Doctors highly recommend following an active lifestyle is beneficial to manage the blood sugar levels. This can reduce the risk of several complications that are associated with diabetes. Unless advised by your doctor, incorporate physical exercises including playing a sport into your routine.

Myth: Borderline Diabetes is harmless

Borderline diabetes is like walking on the tight rope. Hence, it is always safe to keep your lifestyle active and eat a healthy diet to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. If your blood sugar level shows more than 200 mg/dL or fasting sugar level show more than 126mg/dL, on more than two occasions, then you can be certain that you are diabetic.

Myth: Rice and Potatoes are a strict no-no for diabetics

These foods are high in carbohydrates, which can spike the sugar levels, hence, such foods are not “preferable”. These are best consumed if these are eaten with vegetables and legumes that are high in fiber and protein. 3 to 4 servings of carbohydrates per day is ideal for diabetics.

Myth: Diabetic people have low immunity

Diabetic people are prone to catch cold and cough like any other person. However, any illness can make diabetes more difficult to manage. Hence, it is advisable for such people to take seasonal flu shots to keep common illnesses away.

Myth: Losing weight can cure diabetes

Diabetes is not a curable condition. Weight loss is certainly beneficial in the managing the blood sugar level. However, it will not reverse the condition.

Myth: Sugar-free sweets are OK for diabetics

Sugar-free foods are not necessarily low in fat, carbohydrates and calories. Do remember to read the labels before you can satisfy your sweet craving. In fact, replace such treats with natural fruits, which can help you get more fiber and fewer fat, calories and carbohydrates.

Myth: If I am on insulin, my diabetes can be ignored

Insulin is a blood-sugar regulator. This does not cure or manage diabetes unless you practice a healthy lifestyle that consists of health diet and a good amount of physical exercise.

Myth: Fruits are loaded with sugar and is not advisable for diabetics

Fruits are high in vitamins, fiber, minerals and natural sugar. Two three servings of fruit per day can easily replace jam or syrup that are used normally to sweeten the foods. Eat fruits in its natural form than drinking it.

Myth: I don’t have to worry, since I am a pre-diabetic

Pre-diabetes is a warning to change your lifestyle before it can progress into diabetes that comes with other associated illnesses. Changing the diet with more fiber and adding exercise to daily routine can actually help to reverse this medical condition.

Talking about sugar free sweets and artificial sweeteners... today the market is floooded with sugar free products which make use of substitutes. which can be detrimental in the long run.They have side effects.
So it's always better to satisfy cravings with mild sugar/jaggery based home made sweets than opting for sugar free labelled goods.
