The cause of high blood pressure is unknown in 90% of cases. This is called "essential hypertension." In secondary hypertension, a disease or other physical problem is behind the disease. Common causes are kidney or thyroid disease. Many factors are associated with high blood pressure, including genetics, age, race, stress, obesity, smoking, a high- salt diet, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, and a sedentary lifestyle.

I wish to add one more point here as my FIL is suffering from High BP for many years.

High BP patients tend to take less salt in their food. When they grow old, they may suffer from electrolyte issues (low sodium, low potassium).

Low sodium / potassium will damage the brain cells. Brain cells once damaged cannot be revived which may lead the patient to vegetable condition.

The symptoms of low electrolyte level could be sluggish activities, feeling more sleepy, tiredness, brief state of unconsciousness (it is an alarm!), blabbering, talking about childhood days forgetting the present, etc. This is often get unnoticed even under medical attention unless the doctors examine a patient carefully. In many cases the doctor don't even explain the connection between the two factors. We had many personal experience of the issues stated.

It is always better to monitor the electrolyte level also and speak to doctor about it before you undergo a test. In case the doctor prescribe you a medicine to control BP, discuss with him about electrolytes too and so that he/she may prescribe you medicines in part so that the salt level will be reduced gradually between the meals.
