    Melasma is common among women:

Melasma is found in at least 70% of all cases of facial pigmentation in woman.

    What is melasma?
Melasma is the type of pigmentation, which appears as brownish patches on the face. The pigmentation is usually symmetrical, showing up on both sides of the faces and the most common area in on the bridge of the nose, upper lip, forehead and the cheekbones and down wards to the jaw. The pigmentation is typically like a butterfly in shape.

Melasma is commonly found among woman suffering from hormonal disorders like PCOD Polycystic ovarian disease, thyroid and those who are on oral Contraceptives, it also develops during and after pregnancy, and in the pre-menopausal phase. Exposure to sun may aggravate this problem, however it is not the exposure to sun that causes melasma. If she is suffering from any hormonal imbalance even a minimum sun exposure may trigger off pigmentation.

Men also equally suffer from this pigmentation however the biggest trigger factor is stress. Some have a family history of this and cannot escape. This could fluctuate with the exposure of sun and stress.

    Is there a remedy? Cure?

There are three varieties of melasma—epidermal, dermal and the mixed variety; they can be differentiated from each other by examining them under specific lamps. The differentiation is important as the treatment given depends on the type of melasma. While the epidermal variety responds comparatively faster to treatments, the dermal and mixed variety are slower to respond and often the patient may need a combination of therapies involving internal and external treatments along with change in skin care and diet patterns. Unlike other forms of pigmentation, harsh peels and abrasion treatments are not recommended for melasma, as they are likely to cause irritant contact dermatitis which in fact will increase the pigmentation.
