One of the most common thyroid conditions is hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition when the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormones. It is quite important to treat hypothyroidism as it can lead to other serious life threatening diseases such as heart failure and slower heart beat. Here are five important symptoms of hypothyroidism:

Abnormal menstrual cycle: Women with hypothyroidism can have issues with menstrual cycle. Early menstruation, painful menstruation, longer or frequent periods, absence of periods are some symptoms of hypothyroidism. Such hormonal changes can make it difficult to get pregnant and increases the risk of miscarriage.

Skin: Hypothyroidism can decrease body temperature and this can in turn reduce sweating. The skin becomes thick and dry. Increased hair fall, brittle nails, coarse hair, thinning of eyebrows are other skin related symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Digestive System: This condition slows the digestive system causing constipation, which can cause excessive weight gain, sluggishness and diarrhea.

Eyes: Swelling around the eyes, dropping eyelids, dryness in the eyes, eye nerve damage are few eye problems associated with hypothyroidism.

Mind: Hormonal impairment of the thyroid glands can cause depression. If left untreated, it can lead to mental and behavioral disturbance, eventually leading to dementia.

Diagnosis:Blood tests that measures TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and T4 (free thyroxine) are some of the clear-cut ways to diagnose hypothyroidism. It is also important to remember that the results of the blood tests can be influenced by other ailments that are not related to abnormal thyroid function.

    hi

I got my daughter's thyroid levels tested yesterday. She is 18. her TSH is 7.71, free T3 is 2.61 and free T4 is 0.95. Normal values for TSH is given as 0.7 to 6.4. Does this result mean she has hypothyroidism?

Medication is usually used as a means to replace the hormone that is lacking.

High fiber foods, lean protein, foods rich in Vitamin B are good for hypothyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition when body produces too much of thyroid hormone. Symptoms include, exhaustion, lack of focus and concentration, goiter, increased appetite, heat intolerance, menstrual problems, anxiety, nervousness, weight loss and restlessness.
