UTI or urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria enters the urinary system and spreads infection from urethra, bladder and even the kidneys. Symptoms include lower abdominal pain, blood discharge in the urine and sudden onset of fever. UTI are commonly occurs in women than men. Here are some ways that can reduce the risk of contracting this infection.

    Drink Water
: Water eliminates toxins out of the body in an easy way. If flushes the bacteria from the urinary tract. Therefore, make sure you drink enough pain water per day.

    Do not Hold
: Holding the urge to urinate can cause any bacteria that is present to develop into a fully-blown infection. Women often postpone urinating when they have a task. Therefore, urinate immediately when you feel the urge.

    Hygiene
: Practicing good hygiene is critical in preventing UTI. Wash well after using the bathroom. Rinse well during shower or bath is an important step to maintain good hygiene. Use cotton underwear, which is effective in absorbing moisture and prevents the breeding of bacteria.

    Avoid Activities
: Few activities increase the risk of developing UTI. Cycling for a long time, motorcycling and other such physical exercises and activities increase the risk of bladder infections. Remember to empty the bladder frequently when you engage yourself in such exercises.

    Food
: Artificial sweeteners, caffeine, hot spices, chocolate and carbonated drinks also aggravate the risk of UTI. Have a good intake of Vitamin C, which helps to fight off unwanted infections. Oranges, cranberry juice, guavas, leafy greens, papaya, strawberries, kiwi fruit, peaches, sweet potato and peas are some excellent sources of Vitamin C.

    Hi All,

Please take cranberry tablets which is available OTC. This is very good for UTIs. Pop a couple of pills in when you feel an UTI coming on. It will instantly get cleared.

    Hi,
Vvery informative article. As a gynaec everyday i see minimum 2 to 3 patients with urinary tract infection. It is more common in summer and in the working women group.Another way to decrease the incidence of recurrent infections is by taking good amount of probiotics which are available in curds/yoghurt and as tablets.
