    Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a serious health problem. Mainly it affects women and men in old age. Many of my relatives had fallen prey to this disease in old age and suffered a lot.

    What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density. Over time bones are losing their protein and mineral content, particularly calcium and the bones become very fragile. The bone mass loses the strength and even a sneeze or a sudden movement leads to crack or break of bone.

To understand osteoporosis first we should know the formation of bones. Normal bone is composed of protein, collagen, and calcium, all of which give bone its strength. There are two stages in bone formation namely, formation and restoration. In childhood and adulthood bone formation as well as restoration takes place. During this period bones get the maximum density and strength. This takes place till mid thirty and then bone loses its strength in faster pace than it is formed.

    Causes of osteoporosis

Most cases of osteoporosis occur as an acceleration of this normal aging process and this is known as primary osteoporosis. But prolonged use of specific medicines for some other ailments also could cause osteoporosis and this is known as secondary osteoporosis.

Women are prone to osteoporosis if they attain menopause early in their life. Women who do hard work or undergoes surgery, chemotherapy and due to deficiency in diet are also likely to be affected.

Women who constantly diet or do fasting are deprived of protein and calcium and so they are likely to be affected by this disease.

Men who smoke and drink and do not get enough exercise will also fall prey to this disease.

    Symptoms of disease

As bone loss occurs without any symptom osteoporosis is called a silent disease. Therefore, patients may not be aware of their osteoporosis until they suffer a painful fracture. Sometimes even a minor fall will cause a major fracture. A normal activity of bending or twisting to pick up a light object could lead to compression fracture of spine. The fracture can cause severe back pain.

Hip fracture can become fatal for elderly people due to prolong bed rest, which causes blood clot in legs.

    Prevention is better than cure.

A balanced diet with calcium and vitamin D, quitting smoking, curtailing drinking and regular exercise would help to prevent the disease.

To prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women Estrogen hormone therapy is advised.

Beware of osteoporosis and take preventive measures.

    pushpamam,
thanks for creating this awareness..it is a must. it is said that lot of ladies are not aware that they could be having it until it is late..:hide:

I am on the brink of this because of having too many factors like surgical menopause in late 30's, steroids, and low calcium in the bones.

a bone mineral density test gives a indicator.

the recent studies say that hrt (hormonal replacement therapy), has increased the occurrence of breast cancer.

So better including soya which mimics estrogen (infact you get soya based estrogen drugs in the market according to my gyn) and have lots of calcium enriching foods.

    Dear Padhmu,
In our country ladies are very particular to take care of their near and dear ones health problem, but they neglect their health. But now awareness is created by TV programmes and through magazines.

Thanks for coming in and posting your fb,

Maybe that's why my auntie is start on taking a calcium supplement, particularly a MX Calcium Complex for balanced support for the bone health and protection against osteoporosis. She's not frequently on eating dairy foods (source of calcium - vitamin d) she's more on juices and fruits. Do you think the taking of calcium supplement is enough for her to said that she has an sufficient calcium in her body??
