Hi Shoba:

The best solution to lice and knits in your hair is a product called "Perlice" marketed by Croslands Labs, a division of Ranbaxy labs. You should get this in any pharmacy. Í had this problem years back and after trying different products, I tried Perlice. After two applications, it was all gone.

I suspect your dandruff is primarily cos of lice, and hence dry scalp. If after trying Perlice, dandruff persists, then you may have to try and keep the hair moisturised. I have had good results using the following and you may want to try it:

A mixture of Almond and Castor oil, mixed with a pinch of cinnamon powder- heat/ microwave it for a minute. Apply it when it's lukewarm. Leave it on for half to one hour and wash it off with shampoo. Definitely use conditioner. Do this atleast 2-3 times a week.

I have also had good results in India using Anoop oil- but you got to use this for a while to see results.

If possible, getting a head massage from a beautician would also show results.

Let me know after you've tried.

Good Luck,
Prb

Hey Sobha!

Here are a few more things you could consider.

I am not sure what kind of hair care products you are using currently. You need to use a medicated shampoo specifically targetted to remove dandruff; zinc pyrithione (Head & Shoulders), selenium sulfide (Selsun), or ketoconazole shampoos (Nizoral) are all good. Pick one and stick faithfully to it for sometime even after the dandruff has gone. Get a good lice shampoo from the local chemist and get rid of the lice before you think of eliminating the dandruff (Medicare used to work well for me when I was a kid.)

Since you mention your hair is rough, condition it regularly. Olive oil, almond oil, or coconut oil are really good conditioners. Warm it up and massage into your scalp, leave for a good few hours before washing it out. Do this on a weekly basis at the least to see visible results.

Lastly, make sure you eat a balanced diet with lots of colours (think rich pumpkins, leafy greens, tangy oranges, juicy plums...) i.e. fruits and vegetables. With enough water throughout the day. Healthy dietary changes can improve both hair and skin structure. I know it because I adopted these changes and it made a positive difference!
