Did you try an Indian store? I think that Tamarind is only available in Indian Stores not a regular grocery store.

Sometimes you can find tamarind in Mexican stores and I have also gotten the pods from Thailand at Oreintal markets. That being said easiest place is Indian market.

I have not seen tamarind in the American grocery stores. However you will surely find them in Indian grocery stores. If you are fine with using tamarind paste/ pulp, you even get readymade ones. They are so easy to use.
