are you allowed to

1. apply for ssn
2. apply for drivers license
3. apply for state id....

please clarify

If you are on H4 (Dependent) Visa
* you are not Eligible for an SSN.

*You can have a Driver License and for that you need to write a written test
for that you might need to go to the SSN Office in your place and get a SSN Non eligibility note.
you might need an address proof(a bank statement in your name or a phone bill) a bank address would be easier.

*State id depends on state i guess.. for some state you can apply after 6 months and for others it is 1 year

i think few banks do open accounts manually ..u can open an account without having ssn.. i did that for my licence..

Except for the SSN u can have ur State ID and DL. If u r coming to CA , ur state id will be issued once u request one.
And yes some banks do open accounts without the SSN.

SSN - Nope!

Driver's license - Yesss!!
I am in Illinois and I got my Driving license (I am on H4, yes) I had to produce a letter from the SSN office stating that I am not eligible for SSN because I am on dependent visa. This letter had to be produced at the DMV. Am not sure of other states though. Check the local DMV website for "temporary visitor driver's license"

State ID - As others have said, I guess it depends on state. I dont know abt this one!

sorry i couldn't respond before.. yeah Bank of America gives one without SSN.. they put you on Alien basis!! thats something wierd... and you can try asking them to put you as student because if you do not have a salary coming in to your account then you have to have $500 minimum balance on your account.. for students it is 0 balance so it would be good..

I am from IL, so thought would share my experience with you. I am staying in the chicago area and it a beautiful place to live, very lively and nice. Summer is the best time to be in here. When it comes to winter its horrible. Temperature goes below -15 or -20 during the peak. Where in IL will you be staying? Looking forward to keep in touch with you.

As Vids mentioned we do get a letter stating that we are not eligible for SSN and we need to produse that in DMV. Not all DMV accepts this letter, there are only few of them who accepts and gives a state id. To be on a safer side it's always better to check online and proceed.
